Farrell PennsylvaniaAcadia: Discovery House Farrell Review

Since 1997, Discovery House Farrell has provided outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts using methadone. DHF is located in Farrell, Pennsylvania, a small town on the Ohio/Pennsylvania border. It requires clients to participate in group and individual therapy while receiving their medication doses.

Under the Acadia Healthcare umbrella, Discovery House facilities are included among an expansive international group of behavioral health facilities providing chemical dependency and therapeutic support. With its headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee, Acadia serves communities across the country and in the UK with inpatient, residential, outpatient and school-based treatment programs.

Treatment and Staff

Discovery House, a national chain of MAT facilities, offers a holistic approach to the treatment of opioid addiction, helping clients improve all aspects of their lives so that they are less vulnerable to addiction. DHF’s individual and group therapy helps clients overcome and manage their disease while living in a physically and emotionally healthy way. Additionally, clients work to establish a stable and safe home environment and a purpose-filled life with meaningful daily activities (such as work, school, volunteer work, family relationships and creative endeavors) that foster independence and self-sufficiency. The concept of community is also cultivated, and clients are guided through the steps of developing healthy relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love and hope.

Clients must attend group or individual therapy a minimum of two and a half hours each month. Most clients, however, choose to attend group therapy at least once a week and individual therapy at least once a month. Clients are eligible to apply to receive one take-home dose of medication each week after they’ve had clean drug screens and have attended all required therapy sessions for 90 days.

Therapy uses CBT to help clients develop coping skills and handle triggers. Group topics include Cocaine Use, Benzodiazepines and men’s and women’s issues. The treatment team includes physicians, nurses and CADCs. Counselors address co-occurring disorders in individual and group therapy but refer clients in need of comprehensive dual diagnosis support to nearby mental health clinics. Clients are also encouraged to attend peer support meetings while in treatment, and DHF hosts an NA meeting on site each Friday.

DHF hopes that its clients will eventually not need methadone and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.

Extras

DHF prides itself on helping each client meet their individual needs. To that end, counselors spend time with each client creating an aftercare plan. DHF offers a parenting skills class each week to which clients can bring their children.
