Acadia: Discovery House Comprehensive Treatment Center of Huntingdon Valley Review
For over 10 years, Discovery House Comprehensive Treatment Center of Huntingdon Valley has offered outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts using methadone. The facility also requires clients to participate in group and individual therapy while receiving their medication doses.
Huntingdon Valley CTC is located in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, a small village 20 miles north of Philadelphia. The clinic is a member of the Acadia treatment network, which operates a number of outpatient and residential facilities throughout the United States and United Kingdom.
Treatment and Staff
After clients are admitted to the program, they must attend a minimum of two hours of individual therapy and three hours of group therapy each month. After 90 days of successful participation in therapy and clean drug screens, clients may begin the process of applying for take-home doses of methadone. As they continue to qualify for more take-homes, they can reduce the number of hours they attend therapy each month.
Therapy uses CBT among other evidence-based modalities, and groups are led by CADCs and therapists with Master’s-level credentials in counseling or psychology. Groups explore the disease of addiction, handling triggers, relapse prevention and health topics. There are also gender-specific groups for women.
The treatment team also includes physicians and nurse practitioners. Clients with co-occurring disorders are referred to nearby mental health clinics for dual diagnosis support. Clients are also encouraged to seek out peer support meetings such as Methadone Anonymous or NA, and Huntingdon Valley CTC provides clients with a pamphlet of nearby meeting locations.
Huntingdon Valley CTC hopes that all clients will eventually not need MAT, and it works with them to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.
