Conyers GeorgiaAcademy for Family Empowerment, Inc. Review

Academy for Family Empowerment, Inc. (AFE) is a licensed counseling agency that provides outpatient therapy to youth and families struggling with the effects of substance abuse and addiction. The current CEO, Adenise Henry-Simmons, founded AFE in 2003 and a year later AFE began offering services to adolescents struggling with a variety of behavioral health and substance abuse issues. An integral part of AFE’s mission is tending to the community as a whole, even if a particular client or family’s financial resources are limited.

Treatment and Staff

Monday through Friday from 9 am to 7 pm, AFE hosts a substance abuse program for youth. Some groups are didactic and teach clients about the detriments of substance abuse, while other discussion-based groups offer the opportunity for clients to walk through how to build a sober support network and recovery plan among their peer. Group meets once a week and is two hours long.

Throughout treatment, all clients are subject to random drug screenings. Individual therapy is separate from the substance abuse group, though it is available to any AFE client who chooses to participate. Substance abuse assessments are also available independent of any program.

Family therapy as well as AFE’s Intensive Family Intervention (IFI) program are also available. IFI clients are at-risk youth who have severe behavioral or emotional disturbances and who may also be coping with chemical dependency. In this program, families meet with a team of counselors three or more times a week to try and address problem behaviors.

The clinical team at AFE includes a psychiatrist, a psychologist, licensed therapists and substance abuse facilitators as well as unlicensed but experienced support staff from the community.

Extras

Life coaching and an anger management groups for teens are offered, as are a variety of opportunities for family reunification—including marriage counseling and adoption home evaluations.

In Summary

The Academy for Family Empowerment staff are committed to helping youth and their families find appropriate care. As of this writing, AFE does not have enough clientele to support a youth substance abuse group but they expect to resume again in the New Year. While there is no Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), potential clients who are keen to work with a therapist or counselor individually can create a customized intensive program for themselves.
