Abracadabra Recovery Center Review
Abracadabra Recovery Center is a small outpatient substance abuse treatment facility in a strip mall in the Tacoma suburb of Spanaway, Washington. Abracadabra offers six month, nine month and year-long Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) to adults who are over 18. This facility caters to the at-risk population in the area, including criminal justice clients, those with HIV and pregnant women. Treatment includes a variety of group and individual therapy sessions held on a weekly basis.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Abracadabra Recovery Center begins with an initial assessment to determine each client’s needs and to get an idea of his or her history with substance abuse. After that, an appropriate level of treatment is determined between the three available IOP options.
IOP consists of group sessions held five days a week —Tuesdays through Saturdays—for two hours each, all of which clients are required to attend. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, participants have the option to attend a morning session from 10 am to noon or an evening session from 6 to 8 pm. Friday groups are held from 1:30 to 3:30 pm and in the evenings from 6 to 8 pm. The Saturday session is only offered in the evening from 6 to 8 pm.
The counselors who lead group therapy use evidence-based modalities like CBT and DBT. Topics covered include anger management, relapse prevention, the negative affects of substance abuse, the addiction as disease model and coping skills. Individual therapy is also offered, but only scheduled as needed. Clients typically meet with counselors once a week or every two weeks for an hour of one-on-one therapy. Although clients are not required to attend outside 12-step meetings, they are strongly encouraged to build a recovery support group outside of treatment. Counselors can provide information on the AA/NA meetings in the community upon request.
Staff members at Abracadabra consist of male and female counselors who are CADCs and LADCs.
In Summary
In all, Abracadabra is a great outpatient option for those who have already participated in a more structured residential program and need something less intensive. It can also serve the purpose of aftercare for those seeking additional recovery support. Though all the programs are longer-term than many outpatient options, treatment remains flexible and affordable.
