Dallas TexasABODE Treatment, Inc. Outpatient Review

ABODE Treatment, Inc. is a network of substance abuse programs comprised of two residential facilities and four outpatient facilities throughout Texas. The outpatient facilities are based in Joshua, Dallas, White Settlement and Fort Worth and provide programs for both men and women. ABODE outpatient provides secondary treatment for individuals who have completed primary care through ABODE or another facility.

Founded in April of 1994, ABODE offers treatment for those who self-admit as well as those referred from the criminal justice system. The mission of ABODE is represented through their name, an acronym standing for “Adult Basic Opportunity Development Environment.”

Treatment and Staff

The ABODE outpatient program was created for individuals who do not require intensive therapy or behavioral management. Both men and women are welcome, but the majority of clients are men referred through the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. While many clients from the residential program often complete their treatment by stepping down to the outpatient track, the program is open to all members of the community.

All clients must meet with an intake counselor for an assessment costing $160. The average treatment length is three months but may last as long as six to 12 months for clients enrolled in the work placement program.

After a client’s assessment, they are assigned to an LCDC who is trained to assist clients in need of dual diagnosis support. Staff members are an equal mix of men and women and are tasked with creating a unique individualized treatment plan for each client. All clients are given a 30 day trial period to ensure they are enrolled in the appropriate track. If the treatment plan needs to be adjusted, their counselor will make changes as necessary.

Outpatient clients attend group therapy twice a week which commonly incorporates a mix of psychoeducation and relapse prevention. Clients also learn basic life skills including nutrition, budgeting and social skills.

Outpatient clients enrolled in the work placement program focus on how to be a better contributing member of the community and how integrate back into society after their period of incarceration. Counselors work diligently with clients to obtain steady employment or to complete their GED.

Individual therapy sessions are scheduled once per week. Counselors utilize CBT and DBT techniques to bring clients to a better understanding of their substance use. These evidence-based practices help clients to become better at recognizing patterns and problem solving as well as investigating the causes of their destructive behavior.

Clients are also required to attend 12-step meetings on a regular basis and develop a relationship with a sponsor.  Working the twelve steps and developing a support network outside of ABODE increases the client’s probability of remaining clean and sober after treatment has concluded.

Extras

ABODE offers a family program for the spouses and family members of the client. Working individually with a counselor, family work to gain a better understanding of addiction and how relationships can function better at home. After treatment, clients are welcome to attend groups as they wish for aftercare.

In Summary

The ABODE outpatient program allows clients to receive treatment while still continuing to meet obligations of their family and employment needs. With group, individual and family therapy as well as anger management groups and basic life skills classes, each individual is given the opportunity to recovery with support and structure.

Clients needing job placement help may enroll in the work assistance program. Though members of the community at large are welcome, ABODE’s primary objective is to work with the formerly incarcerated to reduce their risk of returning to the criminal justice system, enabling them to become productive members of society.
