ABC Recovery Center Review
ABC Recovery Center, a 12-step based rehab in the Coachella Valley community of Indio, California, started out in 1963 as a place where AA meetings were held every night. Today, it treats clients on an eight-acre campus at an economical cost, with detox included for only $500 more.
Accommodations and Food
The facility occupies both sides of a quiet suburban street, evoking its desert environment with tan exteriors and interiors, and plenty of cacti and palm trees. There are two to three clients to each of the rooms, which have twin-sized beds, nightstands with lamps, closet space and desks. The food is prepared by an on-site chef who creates the organic-leaning menu every Monday morning. Meals are all meat- and vegetable-based unless the client has diet restrictions.
Treatment and Staff
There is no MD on the highly credentialed staff, but ABC uses local doctors on contract; detox is only available off-site through their respective practices.
The 30- to 90-day treatment program at ABC centers around the 12 steps and therapy. Every client is assigned to a MFT or social worker as well as a primary counselor who creates an individualized treatment plan for them. Individual therapy takes place once a week with group therapy every day. ABC also offers a perinatal residential program that caters to expectant mothers through prenatal medical staff and local obstetricians. It even has a “specialized nursery residence” for babies who are born while their mothers are in treatment. New mothers take parenting classes.
On a typical day at ABC, residents wake up at 6 am for an AA meeting at 7 am. Breakfast is followed by morning meditation and chores until 9:30 am. There’s a lecture every morning on anything from anger management to relapse prevention. The afternoon schedule includes such options as group therapy and another AA meeting. There are mandatory on-site AA or NA meetings every night. Cell phones are allowed after the first 14 days of treatment for one hour at night. Computers are prohibited.
Extras
The afternoon schedules also permits for other classes for residents including art therapy and music therapy and meditation. There are sometimes shopping trips into Indio with the staff as well as spirituality classes.
There aren’t many other extra curricular activities but clients can sometimes go bowling on weekends. Yoga is taught on-site once a week. There is a workout room with minimal equipment such as free weights. TV watching is allowed during free time.
The family program at ABC is very strong. On Wednesday evenings, families take part in group therapy from 6 pm to 7:30 pm and every Saturday afternoon there are family group or individual sessions that range from one to four hours. Visiting hours are also every Saturday from 12 noon to 3 pm.
In Summary
ABC’s strong family program, alternative therapy sessions and daily focus on the 12 steps makes it a good place to get sober. The serene desert environment is great for clients who need to get away from bustling cities. The exercise room could be upgraded and there could be more than an occasional extracurricular activity, but the price is low for Southern California and the treatment is solid.
