Paris IllinoisABBCON Counseling Review

Founded in 1996, ABBCON Counseling provides outpatient substance abuse treatment to individuals of all ages living in Illinois. The first ABBCON facility opened in Charleston, Illinois, but the organization has since expanded to offer treatment at two other locations—one in Tuscola and the other in Paris, Illinois.  Each facility caters largely to court-ordered offenders through individual and group therapy sessions, though their programs also accept voluntary clients.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at ABBCON begins with an initial assessment that reviews the client’s background and history of substance abuse. Following intake, the counselor is able to properly determine an individualized treatment plan which determines frequency of group and individual sessions based on each client’s needs. The duration of treatment also varies depending on the client but typically lasts from six to eight weeks.  Dual diagnosis support is not available.

Both court-ordered and self-referred clients attend group sessions together. Sessions are available at the Charleston facility on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 7:30 pm while the Tuscola facility offers groups on Tuesdays from 5 to 7:30 pm. The Paris facility is the only location that offers a weekend group meeting each Saturday from 9 am to noon and Wednesdays from 4 to 7 pm. Clients can choose to attend group at any of the three facilities to accommodate their schedules.

At the Tuscola and Paris facilities, groups are more intimate and typically consist of three to 10 clients per meeting. Charleston accommodates larger groups—usually 24 per meeting. Though groups are not restricted to adults, there are rarely any clients under the age of 18. All sessions are co-ed and cover topics like early intervention, relapse prevention, DUI/risk education, anger management, stress management and the addiction-as-a-disease model. Individual therapy sessions are scheduled as needed and are typically an hour long.

ABBCON’s main philosophy focuses on what they call “Root Cause Analysis and Demand Reduction Strategy,” which addresses the deeper reasons why each client abuses drugs and alcohol. Counselors also use evidence-based modalities such as CBT and DBT. Though there are no 12-step groups available at ABBCON (nor is attendance of AA/NA meetings mandatory), the program does support 12-step based recovery by offering referrals to community meetings upon request.

The staff at ABBCON consists of CADCs and LPCs.

Extras

ABBCON offers an aftercare program to all who complete their treatment program.  Aftercare allows clients to attend group sessions at no extra charge for as long as needed.

In Summary

Though ABBCON works with many court-ordered clients, their treatment options are not specifically catered towards those penalized with drug or alcohol related charges. Treatment also seeks to educate and support those looking to recover from substance abuse dependencies through flexible and affordable programs. The facilities give clients the option to continue pursuing treatment even after completing their program or court-ordered mandates. In all, ABBCON is worth looking into for those in Illinois seeking affordable therapy.
