Established in 1990, AB Counseling, Inc. offers outpatient substance abuse treatment based in the Denver suburb of Lakewood, Colorado. The facility’s services include an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), a standard outpatient track and a variety of related behavioral health services. In addition to treating substance abuse, ABC also offers support for those with co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
AB Counseling’s most comprehensive program for substance abuse is its IOP, which is comprised of three group therapy sessions a week and one individual therapy session with an LADC. There is also a standard outpatient program, which consists of one or two group sessions a week and individual sessions as needed. The length of clients’ programs varies depending on each court order. After several months (and when counselors deem them ready), clients can begin a period of aftercare comprised of one group session per week. This program focuses mostly on relapse prevention, with individual therapy sessions scheduled as needed.
The facility primarily uses CBT methods and tries to keep group sessions small with about 12 to 14 clients at a time. The majority of clients at ABC are there as a result of a court case. DUI classes are also provided for those court-ordered to attend. There are also special groups sessions oriented toward other specific needs, such as trauma-informed care, relapse prevention and a family program. While the facility does offer information to clients about local meetings, there is no 12-step component to treatment.
The staff consists of LCSWs, MFTs, CADCs and an RN. AB does offer dual diagnosis services in the form of an official mental health evaluation and certain group and individual sessions which can address these issues. Still, the facility has no psychiatrist on staff nor is there a medical doctor. As a result, medication management is not available. Similarly, there is no detox provided and clients in need of this service must complete this process before beginning the program.
In addition to IOP and the aforementioned specialty sessions, male clients at AB with children can participate in a special parenting program called Caring Dads. The 13-week group uses Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques, with outreach to the mother of each client’s child to keep them informed of progress. ABC also provides direct services to mothers and children of the client in treatment, making sure the family unit remains active in each participant’s recovery process.
Also worth noting is that the facility works extensively with the Colorado Department of Corrections, Denver’s Department of Human Services, Intervention Community Corrections Services and Jefferson County Diversion to tailor programs that meet probationary requirements. As a result, clients can participate in domestic violence classes, marriage and family counseling and sex offender treatment services in addition to group sessions.
In many ways, AB Counseling, Inc. is a standard bearer for outpatient recovery services. The IOP consists of both group and individual therapy sessions which address specialty topics related to addiction, as well as a series of special classes and programs designed to enhance recovery while meeting court mandates. Though the facility’s dual-diagnosis services are not entirely comprehensive and there is no medical component to treatment, AB Counseling, Inc. remains a facility worth considering for those in the Lakewood area.
