Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, A New Awakening Counseling Agency offers a multi-cultural and holistic approach to treating substance abuse and mental health issues. Founded in 1999, New Awakening offers clients traditional services such as individual, group and family therapy as well as alternative methods such as Ayurveda, acupuncture, massage, yoga and Tai Chi. Overall, treatment is a mixture of Eastern and Western designed to tackle co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
Following an initial biopsychosocial evaluation with a counselor, clients get individualized treatment plans. Though on-site detox is not available, New Awakening can provide referrals when necessary.
New Awakening has a plethora of weekly outpatient groups that focus on subjects such as substance abuse, parenting, yoga, meditation, physical health, stress, anger management and PTSD. The client and counselor decide together which group is the best fit for the individual. Each of these groups meets for two hours at a time, offering a less intensive approach to outpatient treatment. The substance abuse groups focus on topics such as relapse prevention, anger management, introduction to the 12 steps, communication and life skills. Evidence based therapies such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) are used frequently.
In addition to group sessions, clients also have access to individual therapy. These sessions run for 45 to 60 minutes each. Support for mental health issues such as depression and anxiety is addressed through counseling and/or holistic avenues such as Ayurveda. Individual therapy occurs in conjunction with outpatient group therapy or as its own form of treatment. Those who are new to sobriety usually start out with one individual session a week, gradually decreasing as they become more independent in their sobriety.
The staff consists of MDs, counselors and yoga and meditation teachers, Ayurvedic doctors, acupuncturists and trauma therapists. Group sizes are usually no more then 10.

All the holistic services mentioned above, including Ayurvedic individual sessions, acupuncture, massage, yoga and Tai Chi.
Drug testing, including breathalyzers tests and urinalysis, is available for small fee.
