A Family First Community Service (AFFCS) is a CARF-accredited outpatient program located in the metro area of Atlanta. The facility’s credo is to be a “hospital without walls,” and as such offers community-centered programming that can treat clients in their homes, at local libraries or at community centers. Open since 2008, AFFCS is a privately owned company that has an office location for medical services and some group sessions but its preference is treating clients while they are out and about in the community.
Treatment and Staff
Once referred to AFFCS, clients go through an assessment process where treatment plans are developed. Though AFFCS works predominantly with those suffering from mental illness, it can also help clients dealing solely with substance abuse as well as those with co-occurring disorders.
Group therapy is available, though the number of sessions varies by each client’s needs and obligations. There is always a group session that meets on Wednesday and Friday at the AFFCS main office. The primary focus in these weekly meetings is coping skills and the staff-to-client ratio is approximately one-to-15. Individual therapy is provided as well, though the frequency again varies. A psychiatrist is available for these sessions via Telemed, which is an application similar to Skype specifically for medical professionals. All counselors are LADCs, LPCs or LCSWs.
The outpatient programs lasts for six months, with an option to re-evaluate for continued care through AFFCS every six months. Referrals are available as well. Within AFFCS’s program for substance abuse, treatment includes recovery groups, community-based support and the Matrix model. At the end of the program, AFFCS encourages clients to look into and participate in an applicable 12-step program. During treatment, however, participation in AA or NA is not required.
AFFCS focuses on the preferences of their clients, so for those individuals who prefer one gender counselor or a counselor with their specific recovery issues, AFFCS does all it can to accommodate. AFFCS only accepts Medicaid for payment.
Overall, AFFCS is a flexible outpatient program tailored to each individual’s schedule, needs and preferences. This program is also unique in keeping clients immersed in their normal lives as much as possible. Although clients looking for more structure may not find this the best fit, AFFCS still offers a wide range of treatment services that are worth considering.
