The Basics
The San Carlos Apache Tribe Wellness Center was established in 1996 to provide behavioral health services to members of the Apache and neighboring tribes in San Carlos, in west-central Arizona.The Wellness Center offers outpatient substance abuse treatment to both adults and adolescents, and incorporates evidence-based treatment in a culturally-sensitive context.
Treatment and Staff
Clients begin treatment with an intake session and then have an assessment and treatment planning session with a member of the clinical team. Treatment plans includes group therapy from one to three times each week and individual therapy as needed. Most treatment plans last six months. Both daytime and evening groups are available and explore recovery issues, coping skills and the disease of addiction.
The treatment team includes LISACs, LPCs and a psychologist. The Wellness Center also contracts with a telepsychiatrist to provide dual diagnosis support, including medication management for mental health diagnoses. Therapy is influenced by the Matrix Model and uses CBT to help clients create coping skills. Expressive arts techniques are also used in group therapy. Clients are encouraged to attend peer support meetings such as AA/NA in the community, and the Wellness Center hosts a Wellbriety meeting once a week.
Extras
Clients are encouraged to bring family members to individual therapy for family counseling.
For aftercare, the client’s primary counselor creates a plan that may include on-going individual therapy and/or periodic group therapy.
The Wellness Center also offers transportation services, domestic violence intervention and anger management classes. Clients can participate in its parenting workshops where therapists monitor play time and give parents tips on healthy interaction.

Its dual diagnosis capabilities, parenting workshops and family counseling options ensure that clients improve their mental health and family systems in order to make them less vulnerable to addiction.
