The Basics
For over 10 years Rose Medical Association, Inc. has been providing medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to residents of Peoria, a large city in central Illinois. RMA aims to reduce the stigma of addiction and educate and advocate for its clients. It was founded by Dr. Ernest C. Rose, who completed his residency at The University of Iowa, where he specialized in addiction medicine.
Currently, the clinic offers treatment plans using Suboxone and methadone, and clients are strongly encouraged to attend group and individual therapy at the facility while in treatment. Clients whose substance use does not include opioid addiction can attend treatment at the standard outpatient level of care.
Treatment and Staff
After an intake session, the client and treatment team decide which course of MAT they’re best-suited for: methadone or Suboxone. Methadone clients then attend a Wednesday orientation session and Suboxone clients attend a Thursday orientation session.
All clients see a primary counselor for individual therapy at least once a month, and they are encouraged to attend group therapy a minimum of one time each month. The treatment team, which includes physicians, nurses and CADCs, use CBT in groups with topics that include stress management, wellness and handling anxiety (therapy often involves homework).
Clients are encouraged to attend peer support group meetings in the community such as AA/NA, and those in need of dual-diagnosis support are referred to nearby mental health clinics for additional treatment.
Group and individual therapy is included in the dosing fees for MAT clients; clients attending for non-opioid substance abuse can “pay as they go” for each group and individual session.
Suboxone clients can receive take-homes in the first phase of treatment; methadone clients must wait 90 days to apply for take-home doses. For clients wishing to taper, RMA helps them create a tapering schedule that usually includes two weeks of group and individual therapy for aftercare.
Extras
Clients are encouraged to bring family members to individual therapy for family counseling. Each Thursday, RMA’s medical director hosts an education group to which family and friends of clients are invited in order to learn more about the recovery process.
