5th Generation Chemical Dependency Program Review
Adhering to the disease model of addiction, 5th Generation Chemical Dependency Program is a tribal government facility serving the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in North Dakota, as well as non-Native Americans in need of recovery across the United States.
Accommodations and Food
Separated by gender, as many as 16 residents are housed in a former medical facility on reservation land in the town of Belcourt. This is a rural setting—the Turtle Mountain area is covered in forests, lakes and wildlife. Clients share refurbished hospital rooms and bathrooms with at least one other person on the top floors of the three-story building. Treatment areas, communal lounges, group rooms and the cafeteria are all on the main floor. There is a television in the lounge for use during free time, but cell phones and computers are not allowed.
Meals are prepared and planned by a small kitchen staff and served in the cafeteria, three full courses a day, taking dietary restrictions into account.
Treatment and Staff
5th Generation offers a multilevel treatment approach consisting of seven levels of care: Prevention, Intervention, Outpatient Treatment, Day Treatment, Residential Treatment, Relapse, and Aftercare. The six to eight-week residential program does not include detox or dual diagnosis support; clients are referred to the local hospital if these services are determined to be necessary.
The facility provides coverage seven days a week with a counselor on call 24/7. The staff-to-client ratio is roughly one-to-one. Two of the staff members are certified counselors, two are licensed addictions counselors and the rest are peer counselors and technicians.
Residents see their individual therapists at least once a week, but the majority of their time is spent in group therapy and classroom settings, where they engage in open discussion forums, work on and present step work, attend lectures on relapse prevention and take addiction education classes. Cultural arts and crafts and self-help therapy are also part of the curriculum.
Access to AA/NA meetings is provided both on and off-site. Clients are required to attend at least three meetings a week and are encouraged to get sponsors.
Visitation occurs on the weekends from 1 to 5 pm. On two occasions during a client’s stay at 5th Generation, family is invited to participate in the recovery process, first by sitting in on an individual session and then for group therapy during the last week of stay.
Extras
The director of the facility presents and organizes ceremonial dances and sweat lodges and clients learn tribal beading techniques and other traditional artistry.
Nature hikes, outdoor activities and an exercise room are other extras offered at 5th Generation.
In Summary
A person does not have to be Native American to get help for free at 5th Generation. The glory of the natural setting and the cultural extras offered here could serve as a comfort to some and a spiritual expansion for others.
