Burien Washington2nd Chance Recovery Center Review

Located just south of Seattle in the suburb of Burien, Washington 2nd Chance Recovery Center is a state-certified facility that offers an outpatient and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for those seeking treatment for drug and alcohol addiction. The founder, Peter Serletti, opened 2nd Chance because he was inspired to share his own 20 years of personal experience in recovery with others. Serletti recently passed the torch to fellow 2nd Chance counselor, James Lawrence, who now owns and operates the facility.

Treatment and Staff

The outpatient programs at 2nd Chance begin with clients taking an alcohol and drug assessment to determine which course of treatment would suit them best. Many of 2nd Chance’s clients are court-ordered, the overwhelming majority of which have DUIs. For these individuals, program choices are much more limited than for those who are self-referred.

Outpatient programs can be as short as three months or as long as long as a year, depending on the individual. For the duration of treatment, clients attend at least one group therapy session per week and one individual therapy session per month. IOP generally lasts six months or longer and has two phases of treatment. In the first phase, clients attend three group sessions per week. Once their counselor says they are ready for the second phase, this tapers to one group session per week.

Group sessions are held at noon and 6 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and are led by CSACs. All groups are co-ed, though there are both male and female counselors for those more comfortable with their own gender. Group sizes can vary for both time slots. Day groups tend to be larger with 10 or 11 people in each while night sessions are smaller and may have only a couple people per group.

The small staff at 2nd Chance has only three members, all of whom are certified counselors, but also in recovery and AA/NA. As a result, 12-step meetings are highly encouraged though not required. Because the staff all have first hand experience with addiction, 2nd Chance creates a safe space for everyone to open up and explore their issues with no judgment.

Extras

Random urinalysis is required for all clients, the cost of which varies depending on the individual’s insurance. Because most clients come referred from the judicial system, 2nd Chance can also offer counseling for individuals with addiction-related issues like domestic violence and anger management.

In Summary

Overall, 2nd Chance Recovery Center of Washington offers basic and relatively streamlined treatment for substance abuse. Though the facility is small, clients receive plenty of individual attention and care from counselors. While it may be more suited for court-ordered clients, 2nd Chance is worth considering for those looking for an affordable treatment option.
