The Christian-based nonprofit 2nd Chance Outreach operates a substance abuse treatment facility in rural Kentucky. Located in the small town of Campbellsville, which is about 90 minutes from Bowling Green, the programs offered by 2nd Chance include non-narcotics detox, residential treatment, intervention services, sober living and outpatient care.
Accommodations and Food
The 2nd Chance Outreach residential facility is a large converted office building with plenty of room for administration, meeting rooms and dorms. Men and women are separated into different hallways. There are four large gender-specific dorms with eight beds each and four large shared bathrooms featuring shower stalls. Closet space is limited, so clients are asked to only bring what can fit in one suitcase and one backpack. They need to provide their own bed linens (twin sized) and towels. All personal electronics are prohibited.
Nutritious meals are served three times a day cafeteria-style. There is a large commercial kitchen where food is prepared by residents under the supervision of a kitchen staff. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
Inpatient treatment at 2nd Chance is individualized but the average stay is 30 to 45 days. Clients who need detox are offered the option to begin their stay in the non-narcotic detox program. The 2nd Chance philosophy is that without the use of replacement medications, individuals can purify their bodies without consuming any more harsh chemicals. This process is designed to remove all of the toxic build-up in a person’s system. Pregnant women and people over the age of 50 are offered off-site medical detox referrals. Treatment does not specifically address co-occurring mental health disorders, but clients who require the use of psychiatric meds must bring a current prescription and a minimum 30-day supply.
The usual day includes individual and group therapy that follows a CBT approach. All treatment is faith-based and incorporates a Christian-focused version of the 12 steps, with regular on-site meetings.
Staff consists of Christian therapists who work with every client to provide support and guidance. There is also an emphasis on positive peer role models, with senior residents mentoring the newer ones.
The counseling team provides help in transition planning, life skills development and legal advocacy. Clients who are court-ordered are required to bring copies of their paperwork and their attorney’s contact info. These who have legal appearances during their stay will be provided with transportation and an escort to court.
The family program offered by 2nd Chance provides a family group each week that is open to loved ones in any program at the facility.
The program provided by 2nd Chance is a no-nonsense Christian oriented rehab experience. Through a combination of Biblical principles and evidence-based treatment, this program offers adult clients who are open to a faith-based approach a solid foundation in recovery.
