The Basics
Ypsilanti, Michigan may be home to Eastern Michigan University but it’s also home to 1st Step Referral Services, a substance abuse outpatient clinic that has served adult men and women since 2001. 1st Step clients may be self-referred, court-ordered or referred from outside agencies but all are required to complete a minimum of ten weeks’ of outpatient therapy. For those who want to stay longer, 1st Step can accommodate clients for up to one year. Insurance and Medicaid are not accepted; instead, clients are expected to pay out of pocket through a pay-as-you-go system. The mandates of the program are to maintain total abstinence from drugs and alcohol and to punctually attend all groups.
Treatment and Staff
Though inpatient care isn’t offered, 1st Step advocates long-term outpatient. If clients are referred by an outside agency without an ordered minimum length of treatment, they are required to complete 12 weeks. After an initial intake session, during which clients discuss their track records with substance abuse and are assessed by a counselor, treatment plans are assigned.
The curriculum consists of ten successive groups covering topics such as symptoms of addiction, effects of addiction, process of recovery, managing cravings, relationships, support systems, managing feelings, coping with guilt and shame, warning signs of relapse and coping with high risk situations.
The program utilizes CBT as its main modality, which teaches clients to manage anger and understanding the concept of “if nothing changes, nothing changes.” Clients are expected to complete weekly self-awareness reports as well. Positive drug screens or any form of noncompliance may result in an extension or enhancement of the client’s current treatment plan.
The program at 1st Step is guided and overseen by a male counselor who is a Certified Prevention Specialist and a CADC with twenty years experience working in the field of recovery.
Extras
An educational class about substance abuse called Breaking the Cycle is offered one Saturday a month from 9 am to 6 pm for $150 a person. Participants may be self-referred, referred by the court, the DMV, an attorney, a university or the Department of Health Services.
In Summary
While not a not a huge operation, potential clients who are looking for an intimate facility with comprehensive, long-term outpatient care should fare well here. The flexibility and affordability of 1st Step will be very attractive for those needing to stay close to home or maintain employment. However, people in need of intensive treatment show look at an inpatient program.
