1st Step Behavioral Health Review
Located just north of Fort Lauderdale in Pompano Beach, Florida, 1st Step Behavioral Health opened its doors in December 2015. Founder Gus Crocco is a LCSW with more than 25 years of experience in the treatment of addiction and co-occurring disorders and its programs offer several treatment tracks for adults including detox, inpatient, sober living and outpatient.
Accommodations and Food
The 1st Step Behavioral Health residential facility is a condo-style building that includes a pool and beautiful outdoor common areas. Clients share the gender-specific units with one other person, each getting their own full-size beds.
All the units have fully equipped kitchens that are stocked with basic groceries. Clients create meal plans, shopping lists and cook with roommates to learn life skills and create a family atmosphere. On-site laundry facilities are available at no cost to the client.
Treatment and Staff
Each new client at 1st Step receives an individualized treatment plan formulated according to the information collected during the intake process. This includes a comprehensive medical history and exam, urine drug screen, psychiatric evaluation and clinical interview. Clients are assigned a primary counselor that works with them throughout treatment.
Medically-supervised detox at 1st Step typically lasts three to 10 days. Clients in this phase get daily medical check-ups, around-the-clock monitoring, proper nutrition and vitamins. They participate in on-site self-help support groups and develop a plan for continuing care.
Clients are eligible to begin residential treatment when they are medically stable but still need the structure of a residential setting. This program is usually about 30 days and offers CBT-based individual, small and large group therapy, as well as gender-specific groups. Topics include relapse prevention, healthy communication, goal setting and coping skills. There are specialized groups and medication management available for those who need dual diagnosis support.
During the hours of 9 am to 5 pm, residents are expected to exclusively focus on recovery through groups and therapeutic activities. After which, clients are offered the opportunity to go to the gym five nights a week and given the option to go to the wellness center for chiropractic and massage therapy. Transportation is available for residents to go to off-site 12-step meetings, supervised grocery shopping trips and to attend weekend fellowship activities.
The team at 1st Step Behavioral Health includes nurses, CADCs, CSWs, case managers, office staff and a consulting medical doctor.
Extras
Several ongoing outpatient programs are offered in conjunction with sober living. These include a Partial Hospitalization program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and aftercare.
The 1st Step family program includes loved ones in regular therapy sessions with the goal of restoring meaningful relationships.

The detox and inpatient care offered by 1st Step Behavioral Health provide clients with a great start in recovery. Those who are motivated to continue can participate in one of the outpatient programs. With plenty of traditional therapy and exposure to the 12 steps in combination with exercise and holistic healing, this is a great option for those on the Florida coast.
