12&12, Inc. Review
Funded by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, 12&12, Inc. is a recovery center near the University of Tulsa. Founded in 1985, it is the largest Comprehensive Community Addiction Recovery Center (CCARC) in the state and the only one that provides onsite ambulatory detox. It is the mission at 12&12 to treat the more than 245,000 Oklahomans above the age of 12 who are dependent on drugs and alcohol.
Recently awarded the best residential treatment center in the state by consumers through the Oklahoma Citizen advocates for Recovery and Treatment Association, 12&12 is also a Gold Award recipient for outstanding support of the Tulsa community from the Tulsa Area United Way.
Accommodations and Food
12&12 purchased the defunct Sheraton Skyline Hotel in 1993. This 170,000 square foot facility includes 277 double-occupancy rooms, complete with kitchen and dining facilities, offices, meeting rooms and laundry facilities. Extensive programming has been available here since 1994. 12&12 offers medically supervised detoxification, residential and dual diagnosis residential treatment, outpatient treatment, transitional living, independent living, and continuing care services. Residential inpatient treatment houses approximately a hundred men and women at any given time separated into units by sex and assigned counselors. Two men or women share a former hotel room and a private bath, equipped with tub and shower. Rooms are also available for the handicapped and hearing impaired.
There are four floors, and each one has a common area with television, DVD and study area, as well as a library. Indoor and outdoor recreation areas offer volleyball, basketball, Ping-Pong, and other group/recreational activities.
This is a non-smoking facility, and there are no cell phones or personal computers allowed, but the coffee is always on and there are vending machines on every floor.
A licensed dietician works with the full-time kitchen staff to provide three hot meals a day. Meals are served buffet style in a cafeteria setting, with vegetarian options.
Treatment and Staff
If deemed necessary, medically supervised detox is made available through an MD from the University of Oklahoma Medical School. Clients transition out of the detox unit and into the residential program after four to seven days.
12&12’s 30-day residential treatment program is 12-step in focus and provides at least 37 hours a week of integrated, individual, group and educational counseling services. This includes anger management, grief recovery, self-esteem enhancement, coping skills acquisition, stress management skills, interpersonal relationship-building skills, and relapse prevention. Residents attend daily AA meetings and are encouraged to work the steps and get a sponsor. Programs are gender specific, with 8-12 people sharing a group and a highly credentialed therapist, whom they each see at least once a week
Visitation at 12&12 happens on Sundays from 1 to 5 pm following a mandatory 30-minute orientation. Registration for Family Group is on Sunday during the visitation, but programming occurs separately. Families meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 pm to address addiction and recovery.
There are over 120 qualified staff members employed at 12 & 12 and someone is available to residents 24/7.
Extras
12&12 offers residents a Microsoft computer lab for tutorials and classes on resume writing and job searching. In addition there is an on-site gym and indoor and outdoor recreational areas to support a variety of activities.
In Summary
The only potential reservation when considering 12&12 is that though group sizes remain small, those seeking a more intimate environment to get sober may find this large facility overwhelming. Still, this is a minor consideration; overall, 12&12 is a comprehensive facility with a highly qualified staff. The abundance of services and extended aftercare programming make it a valuable recovery resource in Oklahoma.
