Based in Riverside, California, 10 Acre Ranch is a gender-specific addiction treatment program for men 18 years and older. The organization was founded in 1992 and offers detox, residential and outpatient care to adult men struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The social model residential program is open to a small number of clients at a time to encourage a sense of camaraderie. It welcomes self-referred clients as well as men who have been court ordered to treatment.
Accommodations and Food
The 10 Acre Ranch programs occupy four residences in the same neighborhood, including the original ranch home with several acres of land, four horses, a goat, a turkey and various other furred and feathered friends. The main house can accommodate three clients and features a pool and basketball court, while the other homes have three residential beds and one bed for detox. These locations also feature clinical treatment spaces and offices.
The residential homes feature full kitchens and clients are expected to take turns preparing meals for the house. Residents eat family-style to encourage bonding and peer support. Lessons on cooking and nutrition are provided.
Treatment and Staff
The treatment process begins with an assessment to help counselors determine the client’s needs. The on-site medical detox is supervised by a physician and a nurse. The goal of the program is abstinence, so only medications needed to treat mental health and chronic conditions (such as high blood pressure and diabetes) are administered as prescribed. The Ranch is equipped to provide dual diagnosis support and has a mental health therapist on staff to assist clients with co-occurring disorders.
Residential treatment may last 30, 60 or 90 days, sometimes more, depending on the client. The Ranch follows a social model of treatment, so days consist primarily of group therapy and activities, although individual sessions are available as needed. Counselors use a variety of treatment techniques including goal setting, CBT and relapse prevention. The program also integrates education about addiction and the 12 steps into treatment. Clients can attend up to five outside AA/NA meetings a week and transportation is provided.
Time is set aside each afternoon for clients to care for the animals, go to the gym, swim or have free time.
As clients move through the program, weekend passes to visit family are offered, as are family group sessions. These meetings are aimed at providing substance abuse education as well as addressing co-dependency issues. After 30 days, clients can go off-site and visit family for eight hours; after 60 days, they are permitted to leave for an entire weekend.
The program for men at 10 Acre Ranch focuses on providing structure, fellowship and introducing clients to the 12 steps. These elements are designed to help them build a solid support system for when residential treatment ends. The unique setting, option for on-site detox and strong social component make 10 Acre Ranch a good choice for men seeking a new lifestyle.
