The Basics
Since 1974, Phoenix’s Youth Evaluation and Treatment Center has provided outpatient services for young people suffering from substance abuse and behavioral health issues. It’s a non-profit, state-contracted children’s behavioral health care provider under the regional behavioral health authority, Mercy Maricopa. Though it offers a variety of services for young people, Youth Evaluation and Treatment Center’s main offering is an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse. All of YETC’s services are held on-site in its offices with two separate locations, one in North Phoenix and the other in Tempe, located in the East Valley section of metropolitan Phoenix.
Treatment and Staff
YETC does not follow a 12-step based model of treatment, but rather ascribes to the Seven Challenges method of treatment, a framework designed specifically for young people to address substance abuse issues which places an emphasis on informed decision-making. Under this guiding principle, the outpatient program consists of completing at least three hours a day of sessions, three days a week. These classes are held Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 4 to 7 pm. For the most part, these consist mainly of group therapy and education sessions, though individual therapy sessions are available when deemed necessary.
Treatment is available for teens between the ages of 13 and 17. While some clients complete the program in as few as three months, typical stays last between four and five months, including YETC’s aftercare program. This tends to consist of a scaled-back version of their outpatient curriculum, with attendance once a week, as well as an hour-and-a-half long family session that seeks to help clients transition back into a regular routine.
There is no medical doctor or psychiatrist on staff as part of the day-to-day sessions at YETC, though a nurse practitioner is on duty. Unfortunately, there’s also no medical detox available, and residents must have completed this process before they begin attending sessions.
Extras
YETC has a host of other programs in addition to the traditional outpatient services. One of these is Project Next Step, an intensive family program that includes classes in conflict resolution, problem solving, communication and independent living skills. There is also the Project Star program, which offers care tailored to the needs of children of all ages impacted by interpersonal trauma, abuse and neglect.
For parents of children with autism, YETC employs the “Specialty Spectrum Team” to target the specific needs of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. These services include comprehensive psychological and psycho-educational evaluations, developmental evaluations for children from up to 43 months old, free autism screenings for those without insurance, therapeutic services for adults on the Autism Spectrum, functional behavior analysis and sibling support.
In Summary
With expansive services and a length of tenure in the Phoenix, Youth Evaluation and Treatment Center has a program that’s both well-structured and dependable. It also offers a sliding scale rate of payment depending on income, and works diligently to assist clients in finding insurance programs to help in their payment plan. Clients open to alternative schools of thought will find plenty to like in a treatment rubric stressing personal responsibility and lasting recovery strategies.
