The Basics
Wood County, Wisconsin is situated on 38,000 acres of forestland and nestled against 18,500 acres of a State Wildlife Reserve. It is from within this natural abundance that Wood County Human Services provides comprehensive outpatient substance abuse services to community members (from its 12th Street location and at a branch office on the grounds of Norwood Health Center).
Treatment
Wood County Human Services offers specialized treatment in a variety of circumstances. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is five weeks long—clients meet four days a week for three hours at a time. Group and individual therapy take place in one of five meeting rooms at the 12th Street location. The type of therapy and specific group participation is dependent on the individual, as the center also treats co-occurring disorders. If eligible, clients meet in groups of 10 or less on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8:45 am to noon. Friends and relatives are encouraged to attend family group, which meets on Wednesdays and individual therapy is scheduled on an as needed basis.
A mental health clinician and a substance abuse counselor coordinate the dual diagnosis group, which meets on Tuesday afternoons. Although this is an eight-week group, individuals are encouraged to attend group until they feel their needs are met.
The outpatient program is usually recommended for individuals who have successfully completed day treatment and need further support. This program meets twice a week for eight weeks, on Monday and Wednesday from 3 to 4:30 pm. There is also a weekly group for individuals who have had been through treatment in the past and want to focus on maintaining their recovery. This group meets every Thursday from 1:30 to 3 pm.
Wood County’s adolescent prevention program is called the Underage Diversion Group. Sounds kind of ominous but looks promising. Kids between the ages of 12 and 18 get addiction education, problem solving skills and strategies for dealing with peer pressure. This program meets four times over the course of two weeks between 3 and 5 pm.
Continuing care is a little limited—not in scope, but in size. Three blocks from the 12th Street offices is a sober living house, available to only eight men and women at a time who have successfully completed one of the outpatient programs. It appears the case managers are doing their best to give these clients a fresh start by working with them to find jobs, go back to school, enroll in vocational programs and search for suitable permanent housing.
It should be noted that Wood County also provides acute care at the psychiatric facility at the Marshfield location on the ground of Norwood Health Center. This is an involuntary locked facility for dual diagnosis clients who have had some sort of dangerous episode. In this instance, the client is deemed dangerous and is court ordered to psychiatric treatment for alcoholism. The mental health unit has 16 beds in a traditional hospital setting. Depending on the assessment, group therapy, individual therapy (CBT), substance abuse education and arts and crafts are part of the daily routine.
In Summary
Wood County Human Services provides evidence-based treatment for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. This is not a 12-step program, but it is a structured comprehensive program, focusing on education, process groups and strengthening peer and family support. For those who are proponents of the 12 steps, Wood County Services may not be the place; Wood County relies more on mind power than a Higher Power.
