Women of Worth Recovery House in Bakersfield, California, aims to heal the spiritual, emotional and physical toll of addiction. They help build a foundation of sobriety for adult women who have lost their psychological and behavioral footing due to drugs and alcohol.

Accommodations and Food

The house itself is set up like a comfortable home in a residential neighborhood. Fitting with their desire to create a safe, home-like atmosphere, overstuffed couches fill the living room, surrounding a welcoming fireplace with recovery-oriented sayings adorning its mantle. There are a total of 12 beds, two of which are designated for detox. There is one large bedroom with five beds, another smaller bedroom with three beds, and two additional bedrooms with two beds each.

Nutritious meals are prepared in the family-style kitchen three times a day. As part of the life skills programming, the residents themselves rotate the “chef” role on a weekly basis. The designated resident sits down with the staff and prepares menus at the beginning of each week.

Treatment and Staff

The on-site medical director and nurse supervise detox at the house. The Women of Worth Recovery House program is designed for a 90-day stay, but due to changes in many insurance policies over the past few years, they have prepared for the reality of stays not much longer than 30 days. A typical day at the house begins with breakfast followed by a morning lecture and group therapy meetings. Clients then have a little bit of free time and lunch, after which they have educational sessions aimed at transitioning back to life outside rehab and covering various other addiction topics. After dinner, there are different nightly programs, AA/NA meetings open to the public three times a week and interactive workshops.

In addition to the traditional 12-step counseling and group meetings, Women of Worth Recovery House offers CBT, DBT and Solution Focused Therapy. Each client sees her individual therapist once a week to supplement a minimum of 20 hours of group therapy. Women of Worth Recovery House considers itself a dual diagnosis facility; intense psychiatric treatment is not available on-site but they do have access to services in the community, if necessary. Family counseling occurs alongside family visitation every Saturday.

Upon completion of the program, women can transition to two sober living homes associated with Women of Worth Recovery House, pending available beds. In terms of aftercare, program graduates may expect monthly check-in calls from their counselors after they leave the house.

In addition to the doctor and nurse, there are three CACs and one family therapist on the full-time staff, for a client-to-staff ratio of two-to-one.

Extras

Women of Worth Recovery House offers its clients a myriad of extras. There is a swimming pool and hot tub for client use and they promote daily walking groups for exercise. Alternative therapies like gardening, meditation, yoga, art and music therapy are included in the treatment schedule. A Serenity Prayer group is dedicated to dissecting and understanding the core prayer of AA and they also incorporate Native American art and spiritual cultural practices into the program. In addition, the women take weekly field trips to destinations in the community like bowling alleys, movie theaters and water parks.

Unlike many treatment centers, Women of Worth Recovery House allows the limited use of phones and laptops, providing Internet access in designated areas. They also allow clients to bring non-recovery-oriented reading material and board games.

As far as auxiliary services, Women of Worth Recovery House provides a special prostitution intervention service as well as court-approved anger management, domestic violence and parenting classes.

In Summary

Former residents praise the staff of Women of Worth Recovery House for their kindness, dedication and knowledge. The strong sense of community and the life skills incorporated into their alcohol and drug treatment make Women of Worth Recovery House definitely worth exploring.
