Whiteside ManorWhiteside Manor Review

As Kaiser Permanente in Southern California’s leading residential treatment center, Whiteside Manor is known as the “union shop,” a non-profit catering to men and women seeking a low cost, high quality alcohol and drug abuse program in a family-style environment. Tucked in a quiet neighborhood near the historic downtown of Riverside, California, Whiteside Manor has been providing help to those suffering from substance abuse, alcohol addiction and associated mental illness since it was established in 1971.

Accommodations and Food

Treatment at Whiteside occurs in four distinct residences, separated by gender and need—the dual diagnosis program accepts clients on an as needed basis, while the men’s and women’s programs service approximately 30 clients at a time. Men sleep in an apartment residence, while the women share two more traditional houses. Expect to share a room (and bathroom) with at least one other person (and maybe three). Each residence has indoor and outdoor common areas, television and game rooms. The men’s facility has an outdoor basketball court and one of the women’s residences has a serenity fountain on the grounds.

A chef provides all meals—one of the major perks of staying at Whiteside Manor. Vegetarian and Heart-Smart options are available as well.

Cell phones and laptops are allowed during designated hours, as is smoking in certain areas. However, Whiteside Manor has a “zero tolerance” policy for illicit drugs and other contraband smuggled into the facility. For the sake and safety of those serious about their recovery, security systems monitor both the interior and exterior as well as security patrolling the area and the occasional canine perform random searches.

Treatment and Staff

Whiteside Manor works with a local physician to offer a medically supervised detox, which usually lasts from three to seven days. Following this period, clients are admitted to the corresponding residential program on 30, 60 and 90-day tracks. This is a CARF accredited addiction treatment program.

Treatment modalities for all three programs include group, individual therapy and educational groups on topics such as relapse prevention, parenting, communication, relationship issues and anger management.

Men in residence start the day at 6:00 am and walk the dogs before breakfast (pet therapy is known to lower blood pressure, reduce stress level, anxiety and depression). Mediation and goal setting group follow breakfast. Physical fitness, relapse prevention and process group round out the rest of the morning. Twelve-step study, recreational outings, recovery activities and stress management classes follow lunch at noon until dinner at 5 pm. Evenings are reserved for meetings and related assignments until lights out at 11.

The men’s facility also offers “Boot Camp,” a voluntary program at no extra cost where clients can participate in healthy coping mechanisms through exercise, discipline and structure. Peer bonding is an essential part of the men’s program.

The women’s schedule starts at 6:00 am and continues until lights out at 11:30. The rigorous schedule includes gender specific group topics; self-esteem, codependency and boundary issues in addition to the common addiction treatment modalities mentioned above. Time is allotted for yoga, mediation, relaxation and physical fitness in an effort to bring awareness to self-care. The women’s program aids in skill development for parenting and particularly parental bonding, to provide practical, hands-on experiences and activities for parents to use with their children, when applicable.

A similarly structured schedule is followed in the dual diagnosis facility, but psychiatric services are provided as well as medication management. Weekends are less structured in all programs, but there are 12-step meetings, assignments and/or step work expectations seven days a week.

Extras

Movies, bowling, basketball, volleyball and pool tables are available on-site. For other exercise such as circuit training, access to a local gym is available five days a week. Female residents have access to a personal trainer Monday through Thursday, in addition to aerobic training, yoga, Pilates and even self-defense to help boost confidence and awareness. Native American programming (pow wows, sweat lodges, traditional spiritual gatherings), pet therapy and hypnotherapy are some of the additional extras offered at Whiteside Manor.

Family programming consists of a family addiction treatment professional meets with the families of clients two Saturdays a month for an educational segment discussing chemical dependency, blended families, family release and how to rebuild a healthy home and family dynamic.

Graduates receive the major benefit of Whiteside Manor’s Aftercare Program for continued support at no extra cost. Those interested in aftercare can participate in weekly meetings facilitated by an experienced counselor.

In Summary

Whiteside Manor is a leading facility for men and women committed to fighting addiction and mental illness in an environment that is both family-oriented and highly professional. The mind, body, spirit approach to recovery and the separated programming suggest particular attention is paid to gender and dual diagnosis issues.
