Wellcome Manor Family Services Review

Founded in 2007 by  Roxie Mell-Brandtz and Dan Wingert, Wellcome Manor Family Services offers residential drug and alcohol treatment for both single women and women with children. Located in the quiet neighborhood of Garden City, Minnesota, this facility offers a wide array of treatment services, including dual diagnosis support and recreational activities for women and their children, on its serene grounds.

Accommodations and Food

The Wellcome Manor Family Services campus is just that, a former elementary school campus. The renovation created a 40-bed facility for adult women and their children up to the age of 10. There are two residential wings, the first for women with their children who sleep together in a room (there are cribs for babies). The other wing is for women without children, who share double occupancy rooms. All of the women and older children sleep in twin beds and each client has her own dresser, bookcase and closet. It is the resident’s responsibility to keep her room clean and to pick up after her children. In addition to the still functioning gymnasium, there are several common areas: a fitness room, TV and game rooms, indoor and outdoor play areas and a preschool room for daycare.

Food is cooked on the premises by a full kitchen staff. For breakfast, clients eat cold cereal and fruit. Lunch and dinner are prepared by the kitchen crew and include a variety of meals, everything from spaghetti and meatballs to burgers, always with a vegetable. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated for anyone with an allergy, food sensitivity or medical condition like high blood pressure or diabetes.

Treatment and Staff

There are no detox services offered at Wellcome Manor, but there is a physician available to deal with medical issues and a psychiatrist to manage dual diagnosis support. In addition, nurses provide on-site health examinations for clients and their children. Treatment plans are based on each client’s initial assessment and treatment modalities include DBT,  12-step ideology and addiction education.

All clients start out in the Phase I program, an intensive level of treatment that consists of over 40 hours of individual and group therapy per week. Most stay in Phase I for 60 to 120 days. Group topics include women’s issues with trauma, grief and codependency, parenting education, relapse prevention and mental health issues. Daycare and preschool for children is provided on-site by licensed caretakers.

Phase II is a step-down in treatment for clients who have completed phase one but aren’t ready to be on their own. Residents in this phase spend an average of 20 hours in therapy a week for an additional 30 to 90 days. At this stage, clients are allowed to have a car, attend off-site 12-step meetings, volunteer and prepare for work or school. They are also granted day and weekend passes, based on merit.

Wellcome Manor employs four full-time, licensed alcohol and drug counselors (LADC), each assigned to nine clients. There is a registered nurse on staff in addition to the client managers; five on-duty during the day and three at night. An on-call psychiatrist and physician visit whenever needed.

Extras

Every day, women are welcome to attend an exercise class in the mornings. There is an exercise room, a gymnasium and a volleyball net outside. Wellcome Manor also offers art workshops as a form of art therapy.

The family program takes place on Wednesdays from 1 to 3:30 pm. Visitors may stay until 4:30 pm to visit only if they participated in family programming, which consists of addiction education and group therapy.

With regards to aftercare, staff members at Wellcome Manor Family Services help place clients in transitional recovery programs and sober livings when necessary.

In Summary

For women seeking low-cost residential treatment for alcohol and drug addiction in Minnesota, Wellcome Manor Family Services is a great option. It’s one of the few facilities in the state that allows women to bring their children with them to treatment, which is a huge help for single mothers. With daycare, preschool and lots of recreational activities for both women and their children, this facility aims to add positivity and community to the recovery process.
