weemsWeems LifeCare Recovery Center Review

Founded in 1970, Weems LifeCare Recovery Center is located in Meridian, Mississippi and offers mental health and substance abuse treatment programs. The facility has both a residential program and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Weems’ programs are open to clients from anywhere, but priority is given to individuals residing in the counties surrounding Meridian.

Accommodations and Food

Weems’ residential facility provides a total of 37 beds for both men and women. The building is split into two gender-specific wings with 18 dorm-like rooms—each with two twin beds. There is also one room available to accommodate a handicapped client. The building has several common spaces and communal rooms, and smaller rooms for individual meetings.

Three meals a day are served in a large dining hall and are prepared by an on-site cook. Each meal aims to provide a nutritious, balanced meal for clients and typically includes a meat, vegetable and starch. The cook accommodates dietary needs and restrictions if needed. Vending machines are available for between-meal snacks.

Once in the program, clients cannot make phone calls for the first seven days. Weems prohibits personal electronics, including cell phones, computers, iPods and other portable devices. Clients are also prohibited from wearing overly casual clothing—like sweat pants, gym clothes and shorts—daily before 4 pm.

Treatment and Staff

The process at Weems begins with an initial assessment to determine the client’s needs. Although the program does not offer detox,  clients in need of stabilization are referred to an outside hospital for treatment.

The residential program runs for 30 days and consists of intensive group and individual therapy. Clients are required to participate in three to four group sessions each day and one individual session a week. The group meetings are designed to be both educational and sharing-based. The program also provides specialized groups including an HIV/AIDS group. Each client is assigned an individual counselor who monitors their progress.

All programs at Weems are 12-step based and require that clients practice journaling as part of their recovery. Mandatory and regular urine analysis tests are given, and clients are also required to attend off-site AA and NA meetings while in the residential program.

In the group and individual sessions, the counselors use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). The program offers dual diagnosis and a doctor sees clients within the first 48 hours of admission to assess them for co-occurring disorders. The residential program has 10 CADCs on staff. The adolescent IOP also has a large staff including licensed clinical psychologists, a child psychologist, registered nurses and both mental health and addiction therapists.

For recreation, Weems takes residents to a local park once a week and bowling every Thursday.

The facility also offers an extended treatment program that lasts for an additional 60 days beyond the residential program. This track has many of the same requirements of the residential program, but is less intensive and allows clients to begin working.

Weems’ IOP lasts for 10 weeks and consists of three group meetings a week, held in the evenings so that clients can work during the day. The IOP has the option of individual counseling, but it is not required. Clients are also encouraged to attend AA and NA groups and have regular urine analysis.

The facility offers visitation on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 pm to 4 pm.

Extras

Weems has a free aftercare program to anyone who has completed any level of treatment through their facility. Aftercare runs for two years and consists of weekly group meetings and individual meetings as needed.

The family program at Weems provides family group sessions twice a month. Clients and family members may also benefit from individual sessions with a counselor.

In Summary

Weems LifeCare Recovery Center is a great option for clients in the Meridian, Mississippi area who need intensive substance abuse treatment. All of the programs at Weems are voluntary, but clients should be prepared for intense and focused recovery. Weems’ lengthy aftercare program provides a great deal of support as the client transitions back into their daily life, making this an excellent choice for individuals with family responsibilities.
