Volunteers of America Alaska Assist offers adolescents an outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. Those interested in either program must be between 12 and 18 and willing to commit to 12 weeks of therapy. Treatment consists of educational and 12-step based group sessions, along with individual therapy if needed and a weekly family night

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Assist begins with an assessment to verify insurance coverage. The facility works with Medicaid and most private insurance companies. A sliding scale is applied to those whose insurance is not accepted and are unable to pay. After the assessment is complete, clients are evaluated by a clinician who places them in one of the two available programs.

The outpatient program is 12 weeks long and requires clients to attend group therapy for two to three hours a week, with individual therapy available when necessary. Group therapy is available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3:15 to 5:15 pm. Adolescents in need of more structure participate in IOP, which is also 12 weeks long but offers 10 to 12 hours of treatment a week. Treatment consist of eight hours of group therapy and two to four hours of individual sessions per week. Group therapy is available every day from 3:15 pm to 5:15 pm, except on Wednesday, when family programming takes its place for those in IOP. Daily attendance is mandatory.

Group sessions use a 12-step based approach along with evidence-based techniques like CBT and DBT. Topics addressed include anger management, addiction as a disease, drinking and driving, coping with stress, relationship building, maturity, relapse prevention and self-esteem. While clients are not required to attend off-site AA/NA meetings, they are strongly encouraged to obtain a sponsor and work through the steps.

There are two psychotherapists on-site who offer dual diagnosis support upon request or when necessary. Adolescents interested in this service can request to meet with a therapist on a regular basis. Psychiatric medication management is also available. Other staff members at Assist include psychotherapists, LCSWs, LADCs and a psychiatrist.

Extras

Family night occurs every week from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm and is mandatory for those in IOP but only suggested to those in standard outpatient. During this time, a clinician leads an educational lecture on the negative effects of substance abuse. which is followed by open dialogue between families and clients. Staff members are present to mediate the discussion.

In Summary

Adolescents in need of outpatient substance abuse and co-occurring disorders support are offered a range of programs at Volunteers of America Alaska Assist. The programs strongly encourage 12-step involvement in and outside the facility while also educating adolescents and their families about the negative affects of substance abuse. In all, Assist is a safe place for adolescents to face down addiction and make a lifelong change.
