united-summit-centerUnited Summit Center Review

In spite of its Appalachian beauty, the mountain state of West Virginia is no stranger to the epidemic of drug addiction. United Summit Center, a vast mental and behavioral health network serving northern West Virginia, was established to fight the problem. United Summit Center offers adult residential programs at the John D. Good Recovery Center, located in the small, scenic town of Terra Alta, and the Bob Mays Recovery Center in nearby Clarksburg. Both inpatient facilities are equipped to deal with dual diagnosis cases, but those with severe psychiatric problems are referred to in-network mental health facilities. Intervention services and outpatient treatment for both adults and adolescents are only provided at the Clarksburg location.

Accommodations and Food

The John D. Good Recovery Center is an 18-bed, peer-driven therapeutic community. The facility is located in a wing of Hopemont State Hospital and most clients have at least one roommate, but there are some single occupancy rooms available (for an added fee.) Beyond the bedrooms and the group meeting rooms, there is also a small weight room. Because there’s no kitchen in the wing, clients eat three meals a day in the hospital cafeteria. They have access to a microwave and toaster on the floor for snacks between meals.

Bob Mays Recovery Center is an 18-bed facility 65 miles away in Clarksburg. This is a newer residence opened in early 2013 and located in the former United Hospital Center Family Medicine building. In addition to the double-occupancy rooms with en suite bathrooms, the facility also boasts a large group meeting room with comfy black sectional sofas. There is a commercial kitchen where cafeteria-style, home-cooked meals are served.

Treatment and Staff

John D. Good and Bob Mays do not provide on-site detox; still, United Summit has ready access to other institutions that do, so referrals are available. After detox, clients may enter one of the two residential programs. Bob Mays is a 30-day program, so many clients complete their curriculum before going on to John D. Good for a long-term, six- to nine-month hybrid of rehab and sober living. However, treatment at Bob Mays is certainly not a prerequisite for John D. Good.

Healing at John D. Good revolves around community and peer support. For 15 to 18 weeks, clients learn self-reliance and social skills, increasingly interacting with others in treatment more than the actual staff. As they progress in the program, both clients’ privileges and duties around the residence increase.

Residents of John D. Good participate in a 12-week anger management class and a nine-week assertiveness class in addition to group therapy and 12-step meetings five days a week. Peer-led groups centered on the Big Book are the bulk of a typical day. Every morning begins with “Healthy Start” at 8:30 am when clients walk the hallways or use the weight room. There is an on-site AA meeting every evening at 7:30 pm. At a certain level in the program, residents are permitted to leave the grounds for part-time jobs and 12-step meetings in Terra Alta. One downside is that there is no individual counseling or family program offered.

There are 10 behavioral health technicians on-site at John D. Good and, while therapists frequent the facility, they are not employed full-time. The BHTs initially lead the classes and monitor clients’ day-to-day behavior. Groups and classes are eventually peer-led, though still overseen by staff.

Bob Mays Recovery Center employs 15 full-time workers including a program director, one case manager and three therapists. The remaining employees are BHTs. The facility offers daily group therapy and 12-step meetings, with individual therapy every Thursday and on weekends.

Every morning at Bob Mays Recovery Center starts with breakfast at 7:30 am, followed by exercise. During that time, clients may walk the grounds, use the weight room or play basketball. Group therapy and educational classes take up most of the day, with a 12-step meeting each evening. Residents are strictly prohibited from bringing any electronics and are only allowed a 10-minute phone call every few days.

Bob Mays Recovery Center believes in keeping clients isolated in order to get the maximum amount of benefit from a relatively short, but intense program. Visitation isn’t allowed at any point in the stay. Though they do not have family programming, they do offer counseling with a client’s loved ones on the last day in treatment. Staff can referring graduating clients to a United Summit Center aftercare program that best suits their individual need.

United Summit Center’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is located in the Clarksburg office. Clients participate in a six-week curriculum that includes three-hour group sessions three times a week. Groups are led by specialized addiction counselors and cover a broad range of topics.

Extras

The Bob Mays Recovery Center has weight rooms and a basketball court on the premises as part of the Healthy Start program. At John D. Good, there are opportunities for clients to take enrichment classes, finish their education and seek employment. Guest speakers are brought into both facilities on a regular basis.

In Summary

In a state often lacking substance abuse services, United Summit Center offers affordable 12 step-based care, supplemented by individual and group therapy, using a community recovery model. Its facilities are part of a large health network, giving clients a community that can provide resources beyond initial treatment.
