united in recoveryThe Basics

Located in Miami, Florida, United in Recovery was founded in 2005 by CEO Willie J. Gamble. United in Recovery includes four faith-based sober living homes, each accommodating between eight and 12 clients. While 12-step meetings are encouraged, they are not mandated. However, attendance at a Friday night Christian recovery meeting at More Than Conquerors Outreach Ministries, a local non-denominational Christian church is a requirement.

Accommodations and Amenities

Men and women are housed in gender-specific residences and accommodations vary depending on the location. The homes are scattered throughout the Miami area, but all are in residential neighborhoods. Some offer on-site parking for vehicles and are close to bus lines. Most clients reside in either double or triple-occupancy rooms, which are furnished dorm-style. Bathrooms are shared. The houses both include dining rooms, large living rooms furnished with couches, a television and fireplaces.

Each house has a large kitchen fully outfitted with pots and pans, a built-in ice machine, coffee pot, microwave and stove. Residents are responsible for preparing their own breakfasts and lunches. Dinners are provided by Unity in Recovery for an out-of-pocket cost of $75 per month. Residents are also asked to pay an additional $10 per month for household cleaners and supplies.

Rules and Regulations

Length of stay is flexible. There are no time commitments here. Residents are transported to various outpatient substance abuse treatment programs at local hospitals and rehabs. The curfew is at ten pm on weekdays, and at midnight on the weekends.

Gamble works closely with residents, including providing faith-based addiction counseling. Gamble believes that long-term recovery is result of being “delivered” through Christ, as opposed to surrendering to a Higher Power. Transportation is provided for the mandatory Friday church meeting.

Extras

Workout equipment, like weight machines and treadmills are provided at some of the houses.

In Summary

Although this may not be the right fit for those who are opposed to a faith-based approach to recovery and these facilities have been the subject of a local Miami Channel 10 News investigation, former clients are quick to rise to Gamble’s defense. Residents claim United in Recovery provides them with a family-style sober living environment and the support they need.
