Ujima Family Recovery ServicesUjima Family Recovery Services Review

With several locations throughout Contra Costa County, California, Ujima Family Recovery Services is a family-focused organization for mothers and their children. Funded by the federal government, this non-profit program has offered several residential and outpatient treatment programs for substance abuse and mental health issues since 1986. With a small client load and gender-specific therapy, women are able to heal in a safe space. Through hard work during 90 days of residential treatment, a life of sobriety and serenity opens up. From there, clients can continue on to an outpatient program to deepen their healing process.

Accommodations and Food

Ujima Family Recovery Services operates two residential homes, in addition to three outpatient facilities. The Rectory Women’s Recovery Center residential program houses women and children in a vintage Victorian home in San Pablo, California. Four bedrooms are shared between 10 clients and their children under 12 years of age, featuring twin-sized beds, comfortable bedding and colorful interior design. In nearby Martinez, a similar program called La Casa Ujima Residential Treatment Program houses up to 12 women with younger children, aged newborn to five. Homes include kitchens, dining rooms and a living room with a TV. Smoking is permitted on the front porches.

Meals are a group effort in this program. The women take turns running the kitchen, switching off between cooking and cleaning duties. All of the ingredients are purchased and brought into the home by staff members. The women are welcome to give their requests for the upcoming week and snacks can be had when group is not in session.

Treatment and Staff

The La Casa Ujima and Rectory Women’s programs both provide a 90-day window of residential treatment for women and their children. Rooted in the 12 steps, they require clients to attend three meetings per week, in addition to group therapy each day. The women also meet for individual therapy once a week. Group topics are relapse prevention, parenting, domestic abuse, trauma, self-esteem, codependency and communication. Clients also receive education about addiction, parenting, life skills and family unification. While the women are participating in their daily schedule, child care is provided for the little ones. Pregnancy support is available for those who are expecting. While there is no detox available, recommendations to an outside facility can be made.

The three outpatient programs, located in Pittsburg, Concord and Richmond, allow women to come for treatment on a weekly or daily basis, depending on their needs. They spend eight to 12 hours a week participating in group therapy, in addition to a weekly hour-long individual counseling session. The program mirrors residential, without the constraints of having to live in residence, and provides child care. In many cases, women complete the residential program and transition into outpatient until it is no longer needed.

There is also a children’s recovery and family education program that acts as a therapeutic and preventive measure for the addicts’ young ones. The children’s recovery program is a kid’s group for children ages 6 to 16 that strives to create healthy behaviors, as well as strong bonds between the family members. The family education program offers weekly groups with topics such as healthy communication, processing and boundaries.

The staff includes therapists, child-care specialists, counselors and a consulting psychiatrist.

In Summary

Ujima Family Recovery Services allows women from all walks of life to receive treatment free of charge. Through a nurturing environment, child care, life skills, the 12 steps and therapy, the women can reshape their lives. Through parenting support and education, the bonds between mothers and their children are strengthened. Overall, the program provides a strong platformfor a long-lasting path of family recovery.
