A Turning Point Review
A Turning Point, an outpatient rehab center in San Antonio, Texas, was founded by Ron Deage, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with more than 35 years of sobriety. The program uses a range of therapies to combat substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. From traditional talk therapy to the more progressive hypnotherapy, this intimate facility provides the healing needed for successful recovery.
The facility occupies a small office space and is designed with comfort in mind. Groups are kept small, between three and six people, allowing clients to receive maximum individual attention. While meals are not provided, clients are welcome to bring snacks. Smoking is confined to breaks.
Treatment and Staff
The eight-week outpatient program incorporates group therapy, individual therapy and 12-step principles for adults and adolescents. Clients meet at the center for group therapy two hours a day, five days a week. Groups provide the space for members to role-play real-life scenarios and practice interpersonal skills in a safe environment. Feedback and encouragement from others are meant to help improve self-esteem. Group discussion topics includes relapse prevention, anger management, employment, processing, trauma, introduction to the 12-steps and life skills. Evidence-based treatment modalities such as CBT and DBT are often used.
Clients are also able to receive personal attention during individual counseling sessions. These typically occur once a week, although more sessions with Deage can be added for an additional $145. For those looking for something a little less pricey, sessions with interns cost between $30 and $60. During family sessions, clients can improve family systems, gain trust, resolve conflicts and learn about how to be a better family member.
When the outpatient program has been completed, a weekly aftercare group is provided free of cost.
Deage, who has more than 25 years of experience as a marriage and family counselor and clinical hypnotherapist, works closely with all of the clients. The staff also includes several interns, who are studying to become Master’s-level therapists. While there is no psychiatrist or medical doctor on staff, referrals can be made.
Extras
In addition to the traditional therapeutic approach, Deage offers the aforementioned 45-minute hypnotherapy sessions. This course of treatment usually lasts three to five sessions, costing $100 per session. The process is pretty relaxed, as the practitioner guides the client into an altered state of consciousness. Clients with issues such as anxiety, smoking, phobias, insecurities, weight and trauma have had great success with this technique.
In Summary
A Turning Point is a good fit for someone who needs a light program as they progress in sobriety. However, for those deep in addiction or in need of medication management, this facility may not offer enough support to keep someone sober.
