The Basics
Located in the heart of Minneapolis, Tubman is a multi-service agency with almost 40 years of experience serving people in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas by providing a multitude of crisis and intervention services. Its substance abuse/dual diagnosis program began in 1976, when Tubman merged with Chrysalis Center for Women. Since then, Tubman’s outpatient program offers counseling services exclusively for adult women struggling with drugs, alcohol and mental health issues.
Treatment and Staff
The Tubman Chrysalis outpatient program is located in a mixed commercial/residential district in Minneapolis. The building façade is welcoming and hard to miss; a two-story, bay windowed structure with pink awnings. The interior is as feminine as the exterior, with light pink walls in a lobby filled with shabby chic sofas. Therapy rooms are furnished with a combination of sofas and overstuffed chairs and there are two conference style classrooms for lectures and educational workshops. Tubman’s staff believes that a feeling of comfort and safety are necessities in order for clients to feel safe and progress in therapy.
Tubman’s co-occurring disorder outpatient program is a licensed treatment program for adult women who have both chemical dependency and mental health concerns. The COD program includes two treatment options: a day program and an evening program. Clients are placed based on their needs and schedule. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, from 8 am until 8 pm.
There are two segments to outpatient. The first module is a 10-week program, where clients attend two individual therapy sessions and three groups a week. All sessions are 60 minutes long. Women with children are required to attend an additional parenting class once a week. Group therapy is based on DBT and topics include skills group, managing depression and anxiety, anger management, addiction studies, nutrition and mental health and stress reduction. The second module is six weeks; while clients continue individual therapy sessions twice per week, they attend process group once per week.
The treatment team at Tubman consists of Master’s-level therapists specializing in addiction, MFTs and a psychiatrist. Group size is limited to eight clients and women on medication are evaluated monthly by a psychiatrist for prescription management.
Extras
Tubman incorporates recreational therapy into its schedule through yoga, breathwork and meditation and art therapy.
In Summary
Tubman provides specialized support for women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Treatment is based on modifying destructive behavioral patterns; clients learn how to take care of themselves physically and emotionally, and though this isn’t a 12-step program, the possibility of developing tight-knit community still exists.
