Touchstone Ranch Recovery Review
Touchstone Ranch Recovery Center is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility located on a horse ranch in south Texas. Frank and Nonie Reed have been in recovery for over 20 years and in 2008, decided to open up their ranch and hearts to help others find the kind of peace and serenity they have discovered. This hard working, horse-loving pair also work with EAGALA, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to raise awareness about the remarkable benefits of equine therapy. A combination of 12-step meetings, equine therapy and CBT are the basis of Touchstone Ranch’s recovery model.
Accommodations and Food
Situated in a rural Texas town near Stevensville, Touchstone Ranch has two separate cabins for men and women. There are a maximum of 16 residents at any given time. Each cabin has three bedrooms and two bathrooms, with two residents in each room. The nurse’s station is located in the women’s cabin and nurses are on duty from 7 am to 11 pm daily. Clients are responsible for doing their own chores and laundry—machines and soap are provided.
The staff chef provides three meals a day. The food is home-style cooking, ample portions of meat and vegetables and potatoes. There are two separate day rooms for men and women, with a television in each. Snacks are also provided in the day room in between meals, and coffee and sugar are not restricted. That’s not to say there aren’t rules at the Ranch—expect to leave all personal electronics at home or to check them at the door. There is also a ban on any reading material not related to recovery and a strictly enforced dress code.
Treatment and Staff
Touchstone Ranch is a 90-day program. There is a full service detox unit on site, led by the medical director for the facility. Detox can last anywhere from three to five days, depending on the substance and length of use. Licensed nurses are on staff until midnight and medical professionals are on call 24 hours per day. Dual diagnosis support is also offered here.
Touchstone Ranch Recovery Center offers a spiritual 12-step approach to recovery, combined with professional counseling and equine therapy. The emphasis on bonding with and taking care of animals is a key element in the treatment regimen. Individual therapy sessions are held twice per week, followed by equine therapy. Addiction studies classes are also held twice a week and each client is assigned to one of four group therapy sessions, led by a trained drug and alcohol counselor. Along with therapy, each resident is responsible for taking care of the animals on the ranch. These creatures range from llamas, donkeys and zebras to ducks, kangaroos and chickens. Residents are taken to off site 12-step meetings two nights a week and one night a week a 12-step meeting is held on the ranch. Everyone is encouraged to get a sponsor and to work the steps.
Visiting is allowed one week after admissions and is from 1 to 4 pm on weekends. Saturday is family education day, where relatives attend an educational group on addiction studies. Led by licensed counselors, these classes help provide a framework for what the addicts and alcoholics are going through and how this also affects their loved ones.
