toniThe Basics

Toni’s House, located in Las Vegas, Nevada, is close to the College of Southern Nevada, UNLV, bus routes, shopping and employment opportunities, all of which make it an inviting location for men and women to continue recovery but also transition into a more independent lifestyle. This 12-step oriented sober living facility is a self-proclaimed “safe haven” for those frightened that their addiction will overcome their ability to stay sober. Residents learn to care not only about themselves but also about others who may be relying on them.

Accommodations and Amenities

A total of 14 men and women live in Toni’s House in two gender-separate residences that each accommodate six in double-occupancy rooms and one odd man/woman out in a single. There are two bathrooms (in each house), which are shared by all the residents.

The kitchens are fully equipped and residents prepare their own meals. A food pantry is stocked with ingredients and supplies, and bottled water is also available. There’s also a washer, dryer and laundry detergent, and linens and personal hygiene products and toiletries are provided to residents. Clothing collections are maintained at both residences so clients can dress appropriately for interviews, classes and jobs.

Cable TV, a communal computer, Internet and free WiFi and land lines are provided. Residents are able to access movie rentals through Netflix and there’s even a library at each house.

Rules and Regulations

The staff of both residences work to ensure a safe, calm environment for residents, who are expected to learn and respect the rules. The use of drugs, alcohol or mild-altering substances can result in immediate eviction, and each resident must have a sponsor. If the resident relapses, Toni’s House may consider allowing him or her back, but it’s on a case-by-case basis. Rooms and residents’ property are subject to search at any time and there is random drug testing. Rooms have to be tidy and neat at all times. Additionally, everyone has to take part in a thorough monthly house cleaning.

Once in residence, clients apply for food stamps and Medicaid. If they receive disability, they are expected to pay their rent from their checks. Each resident is encouraged to see a doctor for a full physical within 30 days of moving into Toni’s House.

While employed residents are expected to pay rent each month, those who are unemployed must look for a job and are required to complete five online applications daily. The facility discourages employment at places that could jeopardize sobriety, such as bars or clubs.

Rather than establishing a blanket curfew for all residents, Toni’s sets curfew individually as agreed upon during the intake process. Once a resident knows his or her curfew time, they are expected to abide by it and must also sign in and out.

Visitors are welcome once they have been approved by house staff, but are prohibited from entering residents’ bedrooms and have to meet a 9 pm curfew unless prior arrangements have been made and cleared by administration. Each resident is required to supervise and monitor their own children when they visit.

The environment at Toni’s aims to be calming and considerate and so noise from TVs or stereos isn’t allowed after 9 pm and before 9 am. Also, calls from family and friends can’t be taken after 10 pm unless in an emergency.

Disrespect of residents or house staff, stealing, the threat of violence or actual violence will not be tolerated. Cigarette smoking is only allowed outside and butts must be disposed of in designated canisters.

In Summary

Toni’s House accepts high-functioning residents and neither home is set up to accommodate people with significant mental illnesses or disorders. Staff members, who work on a volunteer basis, are dedicated and truly want to help residents heal and recover. This is a no-nonsense sober living house and a decent option that seems to live up to its claim of being a safe haven for recovery.
