taraval houseThe Basics

Taraval House is a sober living located in San Francisco’s Sunset District. One of three Karuna Recovery sober living facilities, Taraval offers a supportive sober environment without the restrictions of a treatment facility. While Taraval does promote independence, clients are still given parameters including drug testing, curfews and house chores.

Accommodations and Amenities

Set in an attractive two-story walk-up, Taraval can house 10 people. The house has five bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms and bay windows that flood the house with natural sunlight. All rooms are double occupancy with twin beds, shared dressers and closet space. There’s a spacious living room with a fireplace and a newly remodeled kitchen with stainless steel built-ins; there’s also an adjacent laundry room. Hardwood floors and clean, modern décor throughout add an airy feel to the house.

Amenities include wireless internet access, a plasma TV with cable, local and long distance phone calls, laundry soap, bathroom and kitchen provisions and an unlimited supply of coffee. Residents are responsible for purchasing their food and personal items.

Rules and Regulations

To live at Taraval, residents must be sober and willing to submit to drug tests three times a week. They must also attend 12-step meetings or outpatient counseling and be willing to take direction from the house manager. Residents are assigned weekly chores and must be dressed and out of their rooms by 10 am. The manager oversees mandatory house meetings, held Sunday through Thursday at 10 pm—only those with steady employment can be excused from these meetings. Curfew is midnight Sunday through Thursday and 1 am on Friday and Saturday. Taraval has a zero tolerance policy on substance abuse, stealing or aggressive behavior between residents. Average length of stay is 90 days.

Aside from treatment, Taraval encourages group activities and even allows clients to attend free concerts at Stern Grove Park. After 30 days, residents are allowed to stay out on 24 hour passes. The house manager oversees house meetings, drug tests, stock house supplies such as coffee, paper products and laundry soap and lastly inspects the facility to ensure all house chores are completed.

In Summary

Overall, Taraval House has a supportive environment with all the necessary structure to keep residents safe and accountable. It helps that clients are required to be actively involved in 12-step meetings or outpatient therapy for the entirety of their stay. In all, the desirable location and luxury-style accommodations make Taraval an attractive and well-priced choice in San Francisco, especially with utilities included.
