Synergy Group Services is a small family-owned South Florida rehab that was founded by Greg Wolpert; his father Barry Wolpert serves as the Executive Director while his brother-in-law David Liporace serves as the Medical Director, and his sister Lisa Liporace is the clinical director.

The emphasis here is on treating the spiritual, emotional and physical aspects of substance abuse addiction, gambling addiction and eating disorders, hence the name “Synergy.” Situated amid the lush tropical ambiance of Palm Beach Gardens, the rehab offers both a 28-day Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) with community living and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Dual diagnosis support is provided in the belief that most people suffering from substance abuse have a co-occurring disorder.

Accommodations and Food

In keeping with Synergy Group Services’ “family” concept, the client-to-staff is three-to-one. Residents live with staff in a house that is a drive away from the treatment facility. The antique white, yellow and pale green colored rooms and bathrooms promote a sense of airiness while the dining room is reminiscent of a quaint countryside bed and breakfast. The living room is furnished with comfortable couches and a large television. Outside the home, the backyard has colorful flowers, grass and a barbecue.

Every client has grocery money set aside in an account that is managed by staff. On Saturdays, they are provided with gift cards to purchase groceries and, armed with a grocery list and assisted by staff, pick out food items at a local supermarket. Food must meet nutritional guidelines. Residents cook their own meals in the kitchen or sometimes on the barbecue. The residence provides a washer/dryer.

Treatment and Staff

Residents are allowed to bring two weeks’ worth of clothing, athletic shoes, a notebook, a writing instrument, AA/NA material, a prepaid calling card and personal spending money in the form of a check. IPods or MP3 players are allowed but computers, laptops and cell phones are forbidden. A house phone can be used under staff supervision.

Each resident receives an individualized treatment plan. Weekly treatment includes group therapy, individual therapy and attendance at off-site AA/NA and other 12-step meetings. Topics such as relapse prevention, processing, life skills training and biofeedback technology are discussed during therapy. Alternative treatmentssuch as massage therapy, acupuncture, recreational therapy and art therapy—as well as holistic pain management through acupuncture and vocational education are also provided.

Synergy Group Services believes that substance abuse is a family issue—their slogan is “We have been there as a family, now let us help you with yours.” Their three-phase family program provides weekly meetings with the resident’s counselor, educational support and group therapy. In addition to family counseling, they offer intervention services, if requested.

A typical day at Synergy means meditation or completion of independent assignments from 9 to 10 am. After that, there is group therapy from 10 am to noon. Lunch is from noon to one pm. Individual therapy is also offered during lunchtime, but typically residents see their counselors once per week. After lunch, residents attend more group sessions that include life after rehab and life skills. The afternoon schedule may also include acupuncture (four times a week), massage therapy (Tuesdays), Food for Thought group (Wednesdays), art therapy (Fridays) and trips to a local gym (every day except Tuesday).

As part of the IOP, clients continue going to 12-step meetings and participate in 11 hours a week of group therapy. Sometimes IOP clients and residents attend the same groups. Numbers are kept small, with each group having no more than six to 10 clients.

Synergy Group Services accepts most private health insurance and offers addiction treatment scholarships.

The staff includes an alternative medicine director, two primary therapists, an acupuncture physician, a massage therapist, a consultant, dentist, administrative assistant, office manager and an insurance administrator.

Extras

In addition to massage therapy, acupuncture and art therapy, staff members accompany residents to the beach or park or to special AA/NA events.

In Summary

Synergy Group Services is a small rehab, but for those who seek intimate surroundings and 24/7 care, it might be just what the doctor ordered.
