Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center Review

In 1995, a small group of women within the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale had a vision of providing mothers and their families a safe place to recover from addiction. That vision became the Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center, which has since grown from one group home to a stunning five-and-a-half acre facility for women and their children.

Over the course of 20 years, Susan B. Anthony Recovery Center has helped over 850 families while supporting over 1500 high-risk children. Located in Pembroke Pines, Florida, Susan B. Anthony helps families end a life of addiction and abuse while also treating co-occurring disorders.

Clients have the option to take care part in a residential or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Susan B. Anthony is one of the only facilities within South Florida that provides addicted mothers and their children a safe place to recover. Since the facility is non-profit, funding comes from the state and county, as well as from private donations.

Accommodations and Food

The main goal at Susan B. Anthony is to provide a safe environment where families can be treated as a unit. The residence is a complex with 40 apartments. Each comes fully furnished and includes a full-size kitchen, large bathroom, living room, dining room and bedrooms. The apartments can accommodate a mother and up to three children each.

Since most women at Susan B. Anthony come from homeless shelters, jail or are recommended from foster care, many clients show up with little more than the clothes they’re wearing. These women are provided housing and food, and also participate in nutrition and cooking classes. Within their apartments, they’re encouraged to cook and clean, and care for their children as they normally would. The approach is designed to encourage healthy habits, as women learn to live productive sober lives.

Treatment and Staff

Once residents arrive, they go through a full bio-psycho-social assessment which is then used to create individualized treatment plans. Customized plans include family and couples counseling, group and individual therapy, trauma reduction and educational services.

While in treatment, clients have access to 24/7 support. Children are offered both individual and group therapy, which helps them build social skills in a safe and structured environment. Women also have access to substance abuse classes and self-esteem workshops.

Throughout the week, residents participate in daily activities that include educational, vocational, therapeutic and recreational opportunities. These include anything from support group sessions to job training to appropriate childcare. All of these services are held in the main treatment building, which is separate from the childcare center and housing. On the weekends, Susan B. Anthony offers visitation hours, 12-step meetings and fun activities that involve the other clients. Residents also have access to acupuncture twice weekly.

Women have access to a variety of educational resources as well, including GED courses, strategies for success (including study skills so that women can enhance their learning experience), job readiness, career exploration, computer skills, personal budgeting and finance. Mothers and children also take part in development and parenting classes.

Susan B. Anthony focuses intently on holistic family healing. They offer a team of 30 professionals who provide treatment for both substance abuse and mental health, among them psychiatrists, nurses and case managers. In addition to the psychologists, doctors and nurses who work within the facility, the child care center is run by Dr. Wendy Siegel and various other early education specialists. This child care facility holds 125 children.

Extras

Susan B. Anthony provides excellent aftercare, with alumni free to participate in both group and individual therapy, continued assessments and further treatment planning. Relapse prevention classes and continued family support are also available. This facility offers excellent services and support for low budget families, with fees based on income and a variety of other factors; private insurance is also accepted.

In Summary

Overall, Susan B. Anthony is a well-rounded treatment facility that offers residential, clinical, psychiatric and medical services. This is the only facility in South Florida which offers such an intensive level of support to mothers and their children. Susan B. Anthony’s goal for the past two decades has been to stop the cycle of addiction and abuse within families, and within that approach they provide affordable and compassionate care.
