Stony Brook Counseling Center provides comprehensive outpatient counseling services for people seeking substance abuse treatment as well as those looking for individual counseling, marriage and family therapy and those with mental health concerns like depression and anxiety. Located in the hub of Fort Lauderdale and 20 minutes from the Florida Everglades, Stony Brook Counseling Center has been offering a hand to people in Southern Florida for over 20 years.
Treatment and Staff
The therapy offices at Stony Brook are designed to make clients feel welcome and relaxed; a fireplace, wall paintings and soft light make a calming first impression. The treatment rooms are full of earth-toned sofas and overstuffed chairs—kind of like a spa, designed to keep defenses at a minimum.
The counselors at Stony Brook are all Masters-level therapists treating a wide range of issues. Most therapists are trained in CBT and provide grief counseling, trauma therapy and spiritual counseling. Stony Brook counselors also have experience treating eating disorders, sexual trauma, parenting issues, sexual identity issues and anger management in addition to substance abuse.
For adults 18 years and older struggling with substance abuse, “Recovery Road” is the chemical dependency outpatient program at Stony Brook. For six weeks, this Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) focuses on the treatment of drug addiction, alcohol dependency and co-occurring mood disorders. Designed for individuals with family and work responsibilities, Recovery Road’s group therapy takes place during the evening three times a week. Monday night is substance abuse education, Wednesday is family group and Thursday is relapse prevention. Sessions are three hours, from 6 to 9 pm and are facilitated by the Stony Brook treatment team. Any individual therapy is scheduled on a per client basis for an extra fee. After the six-week IOP, as part of aftercare planning, clients attend a staff facilitated weekly support group, which meets for 90 days. Although the 12-step model of recovery is not the main focus at Recovery Road, clients are expected to attend AA or NA meetings in order to form a sober community and support network.

Addiction is a complicated issue. Often those with substance abuse issues also have traumatic histories, co-occurring mental health concerns and cross addictions. Stony Brook Counseling Center employs a range of specialists whose job it is to unravel each patient’s history of addiction, providing what looks like comprehensive service, aftercare planning and an introduction to the local sober community.
