The Basics
Step Down, Inc. was founded in July of 2012 by Melissa Thomas, who has worked in the field of addiction recovery for more than 15 years. Located in the thriving recovery community of West Palm Beach, Florida, Step Down, Inc. offers outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for adults.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment begins, potential clients go through an initial assessment to help the staff develop an individualized treatment plan. The exact length and intensity of the program is determined by individual need. Most clients start at the IOP level, which is best for those leaving a residential program or who don’t need the structure of 24-hour care. Those in need of more intensive treatment are referred to local inpatient or transitional care facilities.
The IOP consists of individual and group therapy for approximately nine hours a week. After successful completion of this program, clients typically step down to the standard outpatient level, which consists of less frequent individual and group sessions until recovery goals have been satisfied. Therapists use evidence-based practices, such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). All clients are also required to attend regular off-site 12-step meetings (there is a meeting hall just across the street) as part of their program. Family therapy may also be integrated. For clients requiring dual diagnosis care, referrals for off-site psychological support and medication management are available.
In addition to Thomas, the Step Down team consists of Master’s-level counselors and a CSW, as well as administrative support staff.
Extras
Step Down provides transportation for clients to get to the doctor for visits and prescription refills. It also provides a variety of therapeutic activities including meditation classes, spiritual healing and physical fitness classes. These activities are designed to teach coping, social and life skills, as well as anger management.
