sovereign-healthSovereign Health Review

Sovereign Health is a recovery company headquartered in San Clemente, California, though it also has locations in Culver City, Palm Springs and El Cajon. Outside of California, the company also has facilities in Chandler, Arizona; Fort Myers, Florida and in Delta, Utah (the latter is an all-boys boarding school called White River Academy).

Among Sovereign’s many locations it offers three treatment tracks for prospective clients, namely a dual diagnosis program, a mental health program and an eating disorders program; each is offered in inpatient, Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and outpatient varieties. Details about the Culver City and San Clemente locations, which give an idea of its myriad offerings, are below.

Accommodations and Food

Housing is gender and program-segregated, with nearby residences available in each location for each program track. Treatment takes place in a central facility, though San Clemente’s is homier than the Culver City location. There are shuttles available to take clients to and from respective treatment buildings. Culver City has houses for dual diagnosis and mental health, though the latter is in Hollywood and means a longer shuttle ride to do daily sessions.

Accommodations in these houses are mostly basic, with two bedrooms, bathrooms and living room areas in each house. Bedroom arrangements may not be ideal for those seeking privacy: the set-up for each consists of three twin beds and not much else, meaning residents all have two roommates when houses are full. The bathrooms are adequate though not necessarily large, but an upside is that each house boasts a spacious, full kitchen. All houses also boast sizable backyards where smoking is allowed, each with a volleyball net and a grill. Between their in- and outpatient programs, Sovereign’s Culver City location treats between 35 to 40 clients at a time.

As far as food service goes, lunch is the only meal Sovereign makes fresh for residents, and options are generally basic such as spaghetti and a side salad (though they are willing to accommodate special diets). Other than that, Sovereign has house managers who keep the residences stocked with groceries for other meals, which clients prepare for themselves.

Treatment and Staff

Inpatient clients for all programs stay for a minimum of 30 days and up to 90. Their dual diagnosis program addresses addictions from marijuana to methamphetamines, and focuses primarily on AA/NA-based plans with group meetings as well as CBT. The mental health program treats a variety of illnesses (including more severe maladies like schizophrenia), and offers individualized plans dependent on each resident’s needs.

Intervention and detox services are available for their dual diagnosis program. Both the dual diagnosis and mental health tracks also have a “brain wellness” program, which is a holistic approach in 12 sessions with five components: nutrition, sleep and relaxation, physical activity, socializing and mental activity. These are addressed in private and group consultations featuring neurofeedback and brain mapping to track clients’ progress.

Days at Sovereign Health are strictly regimented, with daily wake-up Monday through Friday between 6:30 and 7:30 am. Between 7 and 8 am, time is set aside to go to the gym or take a walk before breakfast at 8:30 am. After that, clients do basic morning chores at the house and get ready to be shuttled to the clinic for the day’s treatment between 10 am to 4 pm. Depending on the program and the day, this means individual and group meetings and one-on-one time with doctors and therapists. Lunch comes in the middle of that, at 12:45 pm.

After dinner at 5:30 pm comes chores, and time for 12-step groups in the evening which clients must attend at least three times a week. There is also one special house gratitude meeting a week. After all of this is free time, where residents can read or watch TV, and lights out at 11:00 pm.

Weekends also have an early 7:30 am wake-up, followed by family group sessions. There’s time set aside for physical activities between 11 am to 1 pm, though options depend on location—San Clemente clients will be able to take advantage of nearby beaches, for example. After that comes several hours of free time and a group outing from 4 to 6 pm, which generally means seeing a movie or going to a museum. Weekend 12-step meetings are encouraged after outings though these are optional, and lights out is still at 11 pm.

Sovereign Health’s houses have 24/7 oversight from house managers, and both locations are well staffed with a variety of professionals including case managers, nurses and counselors. Still, though they have psychiatrists and doctors on staff (one of each per location), they only come in several times a week to work one-on-one with residents (except in emergency cases).

Extras

Aside from the nuts and bolts, Sovereign Health offers holistic and alternative treatment options including yoga and art therapy, and equine therapy at the San Clemente location.

In Summary

Though Sovereign Health is a big name in the recovery industry, as always potential clients should research every rehab they consider because a number have complaints filed against them; Sovereign Health is no different. Still, all issues need to be considered alongside those leveled at other rehabs as well as the treatment offered at each facility. Aside from the gripes, treatment and accommodations here are solid.
