South Miami hospitalThe Basics

South Miami Hospital Addiction Treatment and Recovery Center is the longest-standing, hospital-managed drug and alcohol treatment program in the United States. Since 1976, this Florida rehab has treated over 20,000 people using the medical model established by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).

From initial intake and assessment, to family counseling for loved ones, to medical treatment for people who suffer from mental or physical health difficulties along with their substance problems, SMHATRC aims to treat the entire person throughout the recovery process.

As part of its effort to deliver “personally tailored, world-class and evidence-based” treatment to substance abusers and their families, SMHATRC provides outpatient treatment as well as other services.

Treatment and Staff

SMHATRC regards addiction as a complex and potentially fatal disease as opposed to a moral or spiritual failure. Its medical model takes into account brain chemistry, genetics, memory, motivation and other influences that contribute to substance abuse and addiction. Each client at SMHATRC receives treatment according to his or her specific needs, goals, strengths and challenges.

At SMHATRC, the first step toward developing an individualized treatment plan is a diagnostic assessment meeting. A team of physicians, intake specialists and clinicians meet with the prospective client (and often their family and friends) and, based on the ASAM guidelines, determine a course of treatment.

Depending on his or her needs, a client’s plan may involve attending day treatment, Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP), group therapy, family therapy or a referral elsewhere.

In keeping with its comprehensive medical model of addiction, SMHATRC offers a wide variety of evidence-based treatments. These include individual psychotherapy, CBT, group therapy, relapse prevention and family therapy. SMHATRC accommodates clients who may want to use a 12-step program. Group sessions generally consist of between five and 15 people.

There is no detox facility, but referrals are made if needed. For people with dual diagnoses, SMHATRC treats the substance abuse and refers clients to a psychiatrist or other professional for support of their other issues.

Treatment plans often include education on the neurobiology and neurochemistry of reward as well as a discussion of the importance of healthy family and social supports and interpersonal relationships.

SMHATRC boasts a world-class staff including physicians, nurses, family therapists and clinical specialists.  All of its clinicians are Master’s-level, either LCSWs or licensed mental health counselors.

Though an inpatient program is advertised on SMHATRC’s website, as of press time inpatient services had been suspended.

Extras

SMHATRC has tailored a number of outpatient substance abuse treatment programs to very specific populations, taking into account the unique needs of young adults, adolescents, Spanish speakers and even “impaired professionals.” The recognition that an OxyContin-abusing CEO and a homeless meth addict likely have entirely different needs and paths to recovery is evidence of the hospital’s commitment to individualized treatment.

SMHATRC sponsors an annual Alumni Reunion where hundreds of alumni of the program gather for “a time of celebration, hope and fellowship.” Its active alumni program encourages and facilitates clients in recovery to participate in local and national prevention and advocacy efforts.

In Summary

SMHATRC’s medical model of addiction, highly trained and specialized staff and commitment to providing comprehensive care explain its reputation as a nationwide leader in the field of substance abuse treatment. The hospital is a good choice for clients looking for a program that reports a proven track record using evidence based treatments.
