For more than 25 years, Social Treatment Opportunity Programs has been providing outpatient substance abuse counseling services in various locations in Washington State. Brad Bresolin, founder and CEO, battled addiction for many years until finally stumbling upon a counselor at a free clinic who changed his perspective and helped him to begin his personal and professional recovery journey. Since 1987, STOP has expanded from a storefront in Tacoma to six cities across the state, including Puyallup, Spokane, Shelton, Aberdeen, Ephrata and Ellensburg. All seven locations treat adults, with the exception of Puyallup, which has an adolescent program in addition to its adult program

Treatment and Staff

Social Treatment Opportunity Programs favors an evidence-based approach, with a philosophy that education and CBT can help clients lead happy, productive lives. Unlike 12-step programs, they do not teach that addiction is a disease.

Clients interested in attending a STOP facility must first schedule an assessment. From there, they are placed either in outpatient or Intensive Outpatient (IOP) or referred to a different program that offers inpatient treatment. For dual diagnosis clients, the assessment  determines whether they can be treated. STOP treats clients suffering from depression or anxiety but those with any other co-occurring disorders are referred to an outside psychiatrist.

Outpatient services are recommended for moderate users who are not chemically dependent. STOP’s outpatient programs last six months, meeting once a week for group therapy and once a month for individual therapy. Groups focus on relapse prevention, decision making, peer pressure and stress reduction. All group and individual therapy sessions are facilitated by a CBT-trained LCDCs. If appropriate, clients can also attend a grief group.

The adolescent outpatient program meets Thursday afternoons for 90-minute sessions at the Puyallup location. This is also a six-month program, and parents are required to attend family group twice a month. The adolescent groups focus heavily on peer pressure, substance abuse education, alternatives to drinking and using, and developing healthy relationships. Those in the adolescent track meet for individual therapy once a month for an hour.

Extras

STOP also offers Alcohol & Drug Information School, an eight-hour Saturday class focusing on the consequences of driving under the influence.

In Summary

STOP’s goal is to offer clients alternatives to destructive behavior, whether moderation or total abstinence. In all, the program is a viable option for those who don’t want to go the 12-step route.
