Serenity RanchSerenity Ranch Review

Located in Alberta, Canada in the small hamlet of Tees is Serenity Ranch, a drug treatment program that falls under the umbrella of the iRecovery Treatment Centers, with operations in both Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Capitalizing on the popularity of Apple products, iRecovery’s namesake refers to its policy of giving a free iPad to all clients to use in recovery. While this may sound somewhat faddish, it should be noted that Serenity Ranch, the first facility to partner with iRecovery, is a CARF-accredited organization with tried and true 12-step and CBT methods.

Accommodations and Food

Residents at Serenity Ranch stay in a recently constructed, sweeping facility that resembles a large hotel. One major perk is that each client has their own private room with a queen-sized bed and private bathroom. The grounds also include a library, atrium and fitness center. Typically there are around 16 or so residents at a time, though there’s room for a maximum of 24. There is a chef on staff who prepares three hot meals a day, buffet-style. With a nutritionist on staff and a personal trainer who visits once a week, clients can be sure that Serenity Ranch works to make healthy eating and exercise a part of their recovery curriculum.

Treatment and Staff

Serenity Ranch offers a medical detox, supervised by a nursing staff; there is a psychiatrist on-site as well. For residents seeking a medical doctor visit, there is a nearby hospital and Serenity Ranch will facilitate these visits. For the day-in-day-out work of recovery, Serenity Ranch relies on a team of licensed counselors. Clients take part in daily therapy sessions with groups no larger than four or five, all of which take place in a classroom setting on the Ranch’s expansive grounds. Serenity Ranch follows a 12-step model as well, with daily meetings on the grounds and an open meeting for the community every Sunday night.

There is a gym on-site at Serenity Ranch which is well stocked with an exercise bike, elliptical machine, plenty of weight machines and free weights; there is also a pool table on the premises. Still, much of the recreation at Serenity Ranch comes from exploring the expansive and scenic grounds. Serenity Ranch also makes an effort to bring every resident into town at least once a week during their stay, believing that such trips help recovery progress into the real world. As an additional perk, clients can pay extra for weekly visits from a massage therapist for the duration of their stay.

Extras

As mentioned, each client at Serenity Ranch receives an iPad upon admission. After a client’s stay, they can also use the iPad for video chat sessions with their counselors, included as part of their aftercare program. The program is the brainchild of Jim Gray, who founded iRecovery Treatment Centers after his youngest son was almost killed by a drunk driver.

In Summary

It’s difficult not to be slightly thrown off by the iRecovery name. Still, it’s important to not write off Serenity Ranch for an association, that, in the end, does result in a nice perk. Potential clients who talk to Serenity Ranch’s staff will quickly realize that this feature is hardly the standout detail of the services offered. Instead, Serenity Ranch’s true nature is that of a 12-step based recovery facility that keeps client rolls low and provides comfortable, luxurious housing.
