Right Step HoustonRight Step Houston Review

Right Step inpatient rehabilitation in Houston, Texas offers the best of both worlds: the comfort of a family-style communal residence with the medical resources of a large drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility. In addition to its Houston facility, Right Step offers inpatient and outpatient recovery locations elsewhere in Texas, making aftercare accessible throughout the state.

The first Right Step location opened in 1990. Four years later, its then CEO George Joseph expanded the program, which now has nearly two dozen locations and has become the largest private chemical dependency treatment provider in the Southwest. It is owned by Elements Behavioral Health.

Accommodations and Food

Right Step Houston is located in attractive historic buildings in a very walkable area of the city. The interiors have been fully remodeled with clean, modern furnishings. Resident rooms feature a single bed and dresser. Treatment and housing are available on the same campus. Food is provided in an on-site cafeteria. The meals created by Right Step’s staff nutritionist and prepared by its chefs, who can make special arrangements for clients with food allergies or observing a vegetarian diet. Sugar and caffeine are allowed, with coffee and soda provided.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment lasts for 30 days and follows a “Structured Program Track” based on 12-step principles. Inpatient detox is offered on site and overseen by medical staff. It typically lasts three to five days, depending on the needs of the individual. Treatment includes group counseling for men and women separately, family and community group therapy and meetings. Group therapy involves CBT and DBTIndividual therapy is provided at least once a week with both a substance abuse counselor and a mental health counselor. In line with the principles of AA, spirituality is encouraged and Right Step residents can attend religious services in the community or participate in alternative spirituality. However, no alternative therapies are offered.

The schedule at Right Step is, like most rehabs, centered on treatment. However, it also includes a fair amount of free time for leisure and group recreation. Mornings begin with meditation followed by breakfast. After breakfast, residents participate in counseling, life-skills training or guest lectures until lunchtime. Afternoon activities involve gender-specific group therapy sessions along with lectures presented by counselors, doctors, nurses and outside professionals. Sessions break in the late afternoon for group outings to local attractions such as museums and parks. Light exercise is built into the program with recreational sports such as volleyball, basketball or softball. However, there is no gym on-site. After dinner, residents attend on- or off-site 12-step meetings and then have a brief amount of free time before bed.

When residents arrive, they go through a three-day “digital detox” with no phones or computer. This serves two purposes, according to Right Step—helping younger residents understand and appreciate human interaction and also helping everyone establish a daily routine without the distraction of communication with the outside world. After the digital detox, residents are allowed 20-minute phone calls three times a week on a house phone as well as access to email. Cell phones are not allowed at any time. Visitors are allowed on the weekends during limited hours, when families in particular are encouraged to visit. A media room with a television is available on-site for residents to use during free time.

Right Step prides itself on hiring staff who are in recovery themselves, which gives them empathy for the psychological, emotional and mental ramifications of addiction and recovery. All staff members also have Master’s level degrees or higher and are licensed. When the facility is operating at full capacity, it has 46 residents and a four-to-one ratio of residents to staff members. A staff doctor visits the facility and nursing staff are on site 24/7.

Extras

Right Step Houston is one of a very few treatment facilities in the country certified to offer treatment from The Daring Way based on the work of author Brené Brown. The protocol explores areas such as vulnerability, courage, shame and worthiness with a primary focus on developing “shame resilience” skills and developing practices that transform daily life.

In Summary

Right Step offers conventional 12-step-based treatment in a comfortable environment but does not go above and beyond the basics. With a greater range of alternative therapies, it would be a more attractive option.
