Owned by the giant rehab conglomerate Elemental Behavioral Health, Right Step has a variety of treatment centers all over Texas. The Right Step Hill Country location offers a more affordable and slightly less holistic version of Promises Austin, a well-known sister rehab a few miles away. While the Promises name is associated with celebrities and luxury, Right Step Hill Country provides a strong treatment program without completely breaking the bank.
Accommodation and Food
The grounds are spread over 30 acres of land, allowing clients to enjoy nature and privacy. The housing is split according to gender, and features two farm-style, 30-bed cottages that are cozy and filled with typical southwest decor. Each client is required to share a quaint bedroom and bath with one other person. When the evenings roll around, TV time can be accompanied by a roaring fire. Private technology such as cell phones and laptops is typically prohibited but a personal laptop can be arranged for business purposes.
All meals are shared in the dining hall, located in the main facility, just a short walk from the cottages. A chef prepares three sit-down meals per day and takes special requests on an individual basis (vegan, gluten free, vegetarian). Coffee lovers have to settle for a cup of decaf in the morning.
The property also features many outdoor recreational areas such as a pool, basketball court, volleyball court and tennis court. Clients are given specific time slots each day to get their bodies moving. A small workout room with a variety of weights is also available for daily use. There are designated smoking areas throughout the property.
Treatment and Staff
The 30-day treatment program at Right Step Hill Country follows 12-step based principles. While the client’s primary issue must be related to substance abuse, Right Step also supports those dealing with co-occurring mental health issues. A unique part of Hill County’s treatment is its positive renewal program. Treatment here has been specifically designed with chronic relapsers in mind. Clients are able to identify the previously learned positive skills that work in sobriety while figuring out what aspects of recovery are still missing.
For those who need on-site detox, Right Step offers a four-day program for $2,900. Once clients are stable, the real sobriety work can begin. Daily on- and off-site AA and NA meetings are required, providing clients with an entree to the 12-step world.
The therapeutic treatment at Right Hill is similar to many other rehabs. Clients meet with an individual therapist two times per week in addition to group therapies run by a licensed counselor. Group topics include drug awareness, relapse prevention, coping skills, employment skills, triggers and trauma. An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is available for clients who need a step down from residential treatment. IOP is held three times a week for three hours and includes a variety of group and individual therapy sessions.
Family involvement is offered through family day, which is held every Saturday from 8:30 am to 5 pm. During this time, families attend a variety of educational lectures, individual therapy with the client and group therapy with other families. For those who cannot make it to these weekend offerings, phone sessions can be arranged between the client, family members and the individual therapist.
The staff at Right Step includes Master’s-level therapists, nurses, a medical director and a resident psychiatrist. All staff has an extensive background in treating substance abuse and mental health issues.
Extras
While Right Step does not offer nearly as many holistic treatment alternatives as Promises Austin, off-site yoga, drum circles and meditation classes are provided at no additional cost. EMDR can be done on clients who have suffered from trauma. There are also off-site outings to the movies and a bowling alley.
A unique feature of Right Step is its aftercare program. Anyone who has successfully completed the drug and alcohol programs receives complimentary two-year counseling and support.
