Reunion San DiegoReunion San Diego Review

Alumni rave about Reunion San Diego. Its unstructured, non-12-step program has only been around for three years but former clients praise the great therapists, kind and attentive staff and five-star meals. Satisfying clientele who are willing and able to pay $30,000-$45,000 for four-hour therapy sessions in lieu of 12-step work is still no small feat.

Accommodations and Food

Reunion San Diego isn’t lacking in luxuries or amenities. Clients get their own rooms complete with a Sleep Number bed and high thread count sheets. There are no restrictions on cell phone or Internet use.

If there’s one thing that all Reunion alums seem to agree on, it’s the quality of the cuisine served. Former clients rave about Dora, Reunion’s in-house chef from Brazil. This could be attributed to the facility’s consideration of each individual client’s likes and dislikes (that are reported upon intake), or the fact that Dora reportedly has a flair for creative and flavorful dishes one might expect to find at an upscale restaurant rather than a SoCal rehab. Nevertheless, Reunion still insists on taking all clients out to eat once a week to give them the experience of interacting in the outside world while they are clean and sober.

Treatment and Staff

While 12-step philosophy is largely based on surrendering one’s will to the care of a Higher Power, the program at Reunion is based on building up clients’ courage and capabilities so that they can rely on themselves and take control of their lives. Reunion feels its evidence-based treatment  methods works best for people who have an internal locus of control—those who believe they have the most power when it comes to how their future unfolds. For those unsure whether or not they fit in that category, Reunion actually offers a short test they can take here.

A typical day at Reunion begins at 6:30 am (7 am on the weekends) with a brisk morning walk or quick workout before breakfast at 8 am. Group is at 9 am followed by individual, couples or family therapy at 11 am. After lunch, there are group activities until 4:30 pm, and group yoga or a workout. Dinner is at 6 pm, there’s an evening activity scheduled immediately after and lights are out promptly at 11 pm.

Reunion has a staff of five clinical psychologists, a MFT and an LADC who specializes in relapse prevention. During therapy sessions, which can last up to four hours, clients are treated with CBT, EMDR for trauma work, motivational enhancement, contingency management and family and social network treatments.

Extras

Outside of therapy, they’re encouraged to attend SMART Recovery meetings, which are available in San Diego almost daily (12-step meetings are not forbidden, but most clients reportedly aren’t drawn to them since they don’t reflect Reunion’s programming); those who wish to attend religious services will be transported to them. On the more holistic side (and as a to all the cognitive work), Reunion also offers massage, acupuncture, mind-body inquiry (a form of guided meditation), meditation, energy healing and Reiki.

The weekend schedule differs from the weekday routine only in that yoga is in the morning instead of individual therapy, and the afternoons are reserved for outings to go to the San Diego Zoo, Sea World, museums, parks, the beach, the movies, the mall, bowling, hiking and professional sporting events. All in all, for the amount of money residents will spend on treatment at Reunion, they can expect a good work-play balance.

In Summary

While 12-step tends to be the standard, many have still reported success with alternative recovery methods. Additionally, there is a lot to be said for the glowing alumni reviews of Reunion and a facility so committed to its own ideology.
