Restoration HouseRestoration House Review

Set in South Florida’s “Treasure Coast,” an hour-and-a-half outside of Fort Lauderdale, Restoration House was started in 1996 by a woman in recovery named Frances Watson. Originally a refuge just for women, Restoration House now also offers local men its faith-based residential treatment and outpatient counseling as a means to conquer addiction.

Accommodations and Food

This family-structured facility offers treatment and housing in one location, though the men and women stay in separate buildings. All rooms and bathrooms are shared. For the women, 12 private rooms are furnished with twin-sized beds and can be personalized to fit their aesthetic, while men sleep two or four to a room on bunk beds.

A multi-purpose room serves as a workspace for computer access so clients can do job searches—library books, other reading material and videos are also available. Television watching is allowed on the weekends and clients can use the house phone on a strict schedule. The outdoor common areas include exercise equipment, like stationary bikes and treadmills (found in a fenced-in area underneath the building) and a basketball hoop.

Cooking is a part of the program here, encouraging teamwork and togetherness. Residents do the grocery shopping and prepare all meals whilst a registered dietitian assists with suggesting and planning nutritious entrees; some ingredients come from food bank donations. Menu items include soup, salads, sandwiches, vegetables, chicken, pork and fish. Additionally, sugar and caffeine are allowed and available at the facility.

Treatment and Staff

The six-month 12-step-based program includes CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), substance abuse education, group therapy and individual sessions which are initially offered twice a week—more are available if needed. To get acclimated to the community, all recovery meetings occur off-site and are mandatory—sponsorship is recommended too. In addition to the 12-step program, residents have the option to participate in Celebrate Recovery.

On any given day, residents wake at 6:30 am for morning exercise then showers and breakfast. By 9 am, it’s time for group therapy followed by an educational class (topics vary). Lunch and chores are at 12:30 pm then there’s individual classroom time for people to work on assignments relevant to their treatment plan. More group therapy runs from 3 to 5 pm—dinner and free time follow. After their first 90 days, residents are assessed on whether or not they’re fit for outside world activities. If they’re deemed so, they normally get jobs keeping them out during business hours. These people have evening one-on-one sessions with their case manager, who is usually there until 8 pm—group therapy occurs afterward.

For medical attention, residents are transported to and from an off-site doctor’s office. While Restoration House does offer dual diagnosis support, this is done in collaboration with a local mental health provider—no psychological treatment is offered at the facility. The 14 member staff consists of certified addiction professionals and recovery support specialists. It is mostly women managing the 22 residents, but there’s ultimately a mixture of highly credentialed professionals and peer counselors.

Extras

Extra-curricular outings include going to the mall, community service and things of that nature. When scheduling visitors, outside guests are welcome every other weekend from 1 to 3 pm—all visitors must be on a pre-approved list.

In Summary

Restoration House is a religious-based program that imparts humility and humbleness onto men and women looking to heal in a quiet town whilst serving their community. Consequently and simultaneously, residents learn self-reliance and find salvation.
