Region Ten Community Services Board Review
Region Ten Community Services Board, part of a statewide network of 40 community service boards throughout Virginia, operates 14 treatment facilities. Located in Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson, they address all aspects of substance abuse, offering a range of treatment options including three residential facilities and numerous outpatient services.
Accommodations and Food
Residential services for substance abuse treatment and co-occurring mental health illnesses are offered at the Wellness Recovery Center and the Mohr Center in Charlottesville and the Boxwood Recovery Center in Culpepper.
The Wellness Recovery Center is housed in a large red brick building and includes seven double-occupancy bedrooms, a large living/dining room and a kitchen. Residents prepare their own breakfast and lunch while dinners are catered by a local dietician following FDA guidelines. According to a staff member, this means high-carb comfort food. Each client is responsible for cleaning their own dishes and eating space after each meal. No food is allowed in bedrooms.

Treatment and Staff
After an initial assessment, clients needing detox are directed to an appropriate service provider. Those who are referred to the Wellness Recovery Center are provided with psychiatric assessment, medication and symptom management, individual and group therapy and education, a PTSD group, movement therapies, and training in mindfulness, stress reduction and emotional regulation. Stays here can last from 14 to 28 days.
On a typical day, clients are allowed to wake up and eat breakfast at their leisure before the first group of the day; goal setting at 9 am. A typical second group meeting is DBT and a movement therapy group precedes lunch at noon. The 1 pm group is usually a topics group, followed by recreational therapy or art therapy. An hour and a half break precedes dinner and visitation times. Nightly 12-step meetings are followed by free time and lights out at 11:30 pm.
The treatment staff at Wellness Recovery includes a psychiatrist, Master’s-level clinicians, mental health specialists, registered nurses, residential technicians and support staff.
Boxwood Recovery Center in Culpepper is a 28-day residential program (stays range from two weeks to 60 days) for males and females above 18 years of age. Its treatment models include the Matrix model, Motivational Interviewing (MI), CBT and daily AA/NA groups. The program also provides group therapy for co-occurring disorders.
Charlottesville’s Mohr Center provides a five-bed sobering up facility for adult males as part of a law enforcement diversion program for men who are at risk of arrest for public intoxication. From there, men can move into the Mohr Center’s 10-bed intensive residential treatment facility for those who need supervised drug-free housing while participating in treatment and living skills training. Applicants must be detoxed and free of medical conditions that would interfere with substance addiction treatment.
Many of Region Ten Community Services Board’s outpatient programs are housed in the recently refurbished Peterson Health Center in Charlottesville, which reopened in February 2015 after a remodel, having added a doctor and two nurse practitioners to its behavioral science professional staff. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides a substance use disorder group meeting four days a week to help clients become motivated to reduce substance use and begin steps toward recovery. The Project Link program provides case management for women who are pregnant or parenting small children and abusing drugs and alcohol. It operates from 8:30 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, providing evidence-based treatment for women who are referred by intake clinicians or through Family Drug Treatment Court.
Five of Region Ten’s facilities in Virginia offer child and adolescent outpatient services. This program evaluates and treats children between the ages of 5 and 18 years for substance abuse disorders and impairments in social, vocational, academic or family functioning. Specific services include treatment planning, family or individual counseling and crisis intervention.
Professional staff in the entire Region Ten Community Services Board network number 600; in 2014, 5,943 adults were served and 2,328 children, so the staff-to-client ratio is about one-to-14.
Extras
Exercise opportunities are many at Wellness Recovery Center: elliptical machines, walking, Tai Chi, auricular acupuncture, basketball, electronic interactive exercise (Wii) and yoga are all available. Unusually for residential facilities, computers and music players are allowed in some of the living areas.
The Dual Recovery Center in Charlottesville offers permanent supportive housing and services to homeless individuals who have problems with alcohol and drug addiction and have serious mental illnesses. It uses a peer-assisted-living model of treatment services to establish and maintain abstinence for participants and address supply basic health care needs, social supports and rehabilitation. Clients must be at least 18 years old, homeless, have a history of at least one psychiatric hospitalization and demonstrate a clinical need for the service.
In Summary
Virginia needs this kind of substance abuse treatment; a myriad of residential locations, specialized outpatient services and dual diagnosis support, evidence-based practices and experiential therapies applied with the individual in mind. Region Ten Community Services Board offers its clients sober community and a continuum of care with the goal of supporting long-term recovery.
