ReflectionsReflections Review

Reflections caters to the executive crowd and is overseen by clinical director Dr. William Hanna, a clinical psychologist who has held administrative positions at both Alta Mira and Bayside Marin, two other luxury rehabs in Marin Country, California. Reflections was founded in 2011 by former real estate mogul Louise McCallion, who today serves as executive director. After seeking treatment for stress and anxiety in 2008 and 2009, McCallion switched careers to enroll in a Masters program in Counseling Psychology, and has been in the recovery world ever since.

Accommodations and Food

Reflections is located in a gated Mediterranean villa with tall ceilings and intricate wood and stonework throughout. The center allows only six residents at a time in private bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms. Laundry and housekeeping are covered and laptops and phones are allowed for those who can’t leave their work behind. To top it all off, there’s an executive chef who specializes in creating cuisine from locally sourced ingredients.

Treatment and Staff

Reflections has residents rising at 7:30 am. After breakfast and meditation, they move into therapy and groups and exercise time in the afternoon, followed by more therapy and dinner. Days are rounded off with rotating evening blocks and an outside support group (12-step, SMART Recovery or LifeRing).

Residents receive a minimum of three one-on-one therapy sessions a week (though it’s reportedly usually four or five). There are between five and seven weekly process groups, as well as two weekly sessions with a CADC substance abuse counselor. Treatment methods include a variety of psychological approaches, including DBT, CBT and psycho-existential therapy.

While there’s no on-site MD or medical detox (though they will accept and try to wean residents on Suboxone/Subutex), Reflections has a counseling staff of several psychologists, a nurse practitioner and an adventure therapist; all primary therapists have doctorate-level credentials. There is also a co-ed, dual diagnosis program that comes in 30, 60 and 90-day varieties.

Extras

Adventure therapy is a big focus here, which mostly tends toward hiking trips to Muir Woods Redwood Forest and Point Reyes National Seashore.

There are also relapse prevention groups lead by Dr. Hanna and a special two-day family program once a month. Additional psychological and neuropsychological testing is available if needed, as are sober companions and non-traditional therapies (herbalism, nutrition management and acupuncture) for extra fees.

The other side of treatment emphasizes experiential therapies like art therapy, music therapy and equine therapy, and physical activities such as Tai Chi, yoga and indoor rock-climbing. Other amenities include a Roman-style pool, hot tub, game room and on-site gym.

In Summary

From the staff to the sumptuous accommodations, Reflections has a lot to offer.
