rediscoverReDiscover Review

ReDiscover is a non-profit community mental health agency that was founded in 1969 in the basement of a Missouri church by a group of volunteers who believed those with mental illnesses should not have to suffer due to the inability to pay for treatment. ReDiscover continue to offer cost-effective treatment not only to the mentally ill but for addiction.

For those with substance abuse issues, ReDiscover operates three inpatient programs in the Kansas City area that also provide treatment for co-occurring disorders. The Armour Boulevard location houses the outpatient program and the inpatient for single women; Lee’s Summit is for adult men and women and Catherine’s Place is for mothers and pregnant women.

Catherine’s Place is one of the few programs in Kansas City that allows mothers to bring their children to treatment. It also has a childcare center, which provides day care for the kids of the 150 women a day who participate in the outpatient programs at Armour Boulevard.

Next door to Catherine’s Place is Friendship House, the original site of the women’s recovery program. The founders of Friendship House expanded in 2002 by building Catherine’s Place. ReDiscover acquired both properties in 2009 and is renovating Friendship House with the goal of housing more women in recovery and their children.

Accommodations and Food

At ReDiscover’s Armour Boulevard location, up to 11 residents share rooms with one or two other women. Catherine’s Place holds up to 14 women and their children. Moms share rooms with their children, while pregnant women share rooms with other pregnant women. Lee’s Summit can accommodate eight men and women and roommates are assigned according to gender. At all three facilities, the accommodations are modest with limited storage. All facilities also have a lounge area with a TV. Catherine’s Place features a child play area and outdoor playground.

Residents eat three meals a day while in treatment. At Catherine’s Place, the women often make their own breakfast with help from staff—breakfasts are usually simple and may be cold, like cereal, or hot, like eggs and bacon. The residents of Catherine’s Place eat lunch and dinner at the Armour location, where meals are served cafeteria-style. Food options are basic and may include pizza or burgers.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at ReDiscover is individualized, evidence-based and open to those suffering from co-occurring disorders. The program includes individual therapy, group therapy, case management, Motivational Interviewing (MI), 12-step meetings, life skills training including parenting, nutrition, stress management, budgeting, relapse prevention and job readiness, including interview skills and resume guidance.

A typical day begins with an early morning wake-up, followed by breakfast. Those living at Catherine’s Place are then shuttled to the Armour location, where they take part in treatment and also eat lunch and dinner. They attend a morning group and may have an individual session before lunch in the early afternoon. After lunch, they continue groups until dinner. After dinner at about 8:30 pm, the women of Catherine’s Place return to their residence and get ready for lights out. They also sometimes attend outside 12-step meetings, about two days a week.

Staff includes psychiatrists, licensed substance abuse counselors, nurses, chemical dependency technicians, childcare providers and administrative staff. The staff-to-resident ratio is about one-to-two.

Extras

ReDiscover believes family involvement is essential to recovery, so they offer family therapy for both their residential and outpatient programs. Family therapy involves groups and education to open up the lines of communication and teach families about addiction.

After completing treatment, residents begin an eight- to 11-month aftercare program, using the outpatient services at the Armour location. Aftercare may include individual therapy and group therapy, but varies depending on the client.

Women on probation for criminal offenses can participate in ReDiscover’s Alt Care program, which provides outpatient services including individual therapy, treatment for co-occurring disorders, group therapy, family therapy, on-site child care, parenting skills training, case management and crisis support.

In Summary

ReDiscover offers comprehensive treatment from a professional, well-trained staff, making it an ideal choice for recovery, particularly for pregnant women and women with children. These programs are also affordable, which is an added bonus.
