recovery-centers-of-king-countyRecovery Centers of King County Review

Recovery Centers of King County opened in 1973 and now serves approximately 6,000 persons each year with a full continuum of care, from detox to residential, outpatient and sober living services. From its location on a quiet street, just a few minutes east of downtown Seattle, Recovery Centers of King County pledges to rebuild the lives of men and women affected by addiction.

Accommodations and Food

Detox and inpatient services are offered in a medical clinic located a few blocks away from the administrative offices and outpatient services. The two-story white building is set back from a residential street and surrounded by trees. Inside, there is no mistaking the medical clinic aspect of this place; tiled floors, fluorescent lights, meeting room furniture. As many as 32 clients, separated by gender, sleep on hospital beds in rooms that accommodate two or three people. Bathrooms are shared.

All clients eat together in the cafeteria and all meals are thoroughly planned out. Pioneer Human Services delivers fully-cooked meals to Recovery Centers of King County, hospitals, extended care facilities, day care centers and work release facilities in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. Menus are checked for compliance with Washington State and federal nutrition requirements to ensure all meals meet the dietary needs of clients. Accordingly, special dietary needs, such as diabetic, gluten-free, low sodium and kosher, can be accommodated. Nutritious snacks are also available at all times.

Treatment and Staff

Physicians from the University of Washington Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program staff the detox unit at Recovery Centers of King County. Medically supervised detox usually lasts between three to five days, but length of stay depends on the substance in use and individual response to withdrawal. After detox, patients are referred to inpatient or outpatient treatment, both of which are offered at Recovery Centers of King County.

Twelve-step methodology is the foundation of the 28-day residential treatment plan. Each client is assigned a certified counselor who selects from evidence-based treatment modes, such as CBT and DBT, for both individual and group therapy, the latter being separated by gender. The weekday schedule begins at 6:30 am with wakeup, chores, breakfast and medication. At 8:30 am is the Daily Reflections meeting; two groups, separated by a 15-minute break, complete morning activities. After lunch, two afternoon groups and a one-hour walk precede the 5 pm dinner hour. A process group is held at 6 pm, followed by a 12-step meeting. The weekend schedule includes art activities and much free time.

Most of the staff of the inpatient treatment program were treated at Recovery Centers of King County and then pursued chemical dependency training. About 20 staff members serve the detox and inpatient facility, making the client-to-staff ratio about one and a half-to-one. Recovery Centers of King County is also an active member of the National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network, which conducts behavioral and pharmacological multi-site clinical trials to determine the effectiveness of community-based treatment programs. CTN associates are often on-site.

Outpatient services are offered at two locations, in Kent and Seattle. This is often a step down in treatment for graduates of the inpatient program, who can attend outpatient throughout the day while living at the Recovery Centers of King County sober living house. The program includes group and individual counseling, relapse prevention, 12-step fundamentals and job readiness assistance.

Recovery Centers of King County also offers a specialized co-occurring disorders program designed to serve people who suffer from both chemical dependency and mental illness. A board-certified psychiatrist and a state-licensed mental health counselor supervise this program, which is available at both outpatient facilities. Qualified mental health staff and certified chemical dependency counselors provide intake assessments and counseling services for these specialized clients.

Extras

Recovery Centers of King County offers a women’s outpatient program with free childcare and transportation for low-income women and parenting education groups. DUI assessments and alcohol education for individuals, community groups and schools are also available. An effort is made to offer services to patients of all income levels; Medicaid may cover services for those who are eligible. A sliding fee scale based on income is also available.

In Summary

Not only are the counselors in recovery themselves, most of them came up through the continuum of care at Recovery Centers of King County. Clients get the benefit of a caring sober community and peer support in addition to evidence-based practices and clinical trials; nothing is left out. Specialty programming for dual diagnosis clients, gender specific residential care and transitional housing are just a few more reasons Recovery Centers of King County is a great option for recovery in the Seattle area.
